National Sports Awards are given by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Government of Bangladesh for specific contributions in the field of games and sports. [1] [2] The award was introduced in 1976. [3] As of 2011, total 175 sports personalities won the award. [3]

The awardees include the organisers of games and sports, and the individuals displaying extraordinary performances in football, hockey, cricket, swimming, shooting, chase, and athletics. Each awardee is entitled to a gold medal and twenty thousand taka in cash. [4] Next the amount of cash was increased to tk 50,000 in May 2017 and now tk 1,00,000 each from November 2019. [5]

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a major political party in Bangladesh. It was founded on 1 September 1978 by the late Bangladeshi president Ziaur Rahman, after the presidential election of 1978, with a view of uniting people with a nationalist ideology. Following Rahman's assassination in 1981, his widow, Khaleda Zia, took over leadership of the party and presided as chairperson until her imprisonment, in 2018. Since then, Tarique Rahman, the son of Rahman and Zia, has served as acting chairperson and has run the affairs of the party from London.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bangla Academy</span> Bangladeshs national language authority

The Bangla Academy is the official regulatory body of the Bengali language in Bangladesh. It is an autonomous institution funded by the Government of Bangladesh that fosters the Bengali language, literature and culture, works to develop and implement national language policy and conducts original research in Bengali. Established in 1955, it is located in the Burdwan House in Shahbagh, Dhaka, within the grounds of the University of Dhaka and Suhrawardy Udyan. The Bangla Academy hosts the annual Ekushey Book Fair.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh</span> Highest court of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh

The High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh popularly known as the 'High Court' is one of the two divisions of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, the other division being the Appellate Division. It consists of the Chief Justice of Bangladesh and the Judges of the High Court Division.

Jail Killing Day is observed by the Awami League (AL) of Bangladesh and many other political organisations on 3 November every year. It commemorates the killing of four Awami League and national leaders: former vice-president Syed Nazrul Islam, former prime minister Tajuddin Ahmed and Captain (Rtd.) Mansur Ali, and former home minister A H M Quamruzzaman on this date in 1975.

The 2016 Bangladesh Football Premier League was the ninth season of the Bangladesh Premier League since establishment of the league in 2007. A total of 12 teams competed in the league. The league began on 24 July 2016.

Chowdhury is a title of honour, usually hereditary, originating from the Indian subcontinent. It is an adaption from Sanskrit. During the Mughal rule, it was a title awarded to eminent people, while during British rule, the term was associated with zamindars and social leaders. The common female equivalent was Chowdhurani. Many landlords under the Permanent Settlement carried this surname. Land reforms after the partition of India abolished the permanent settlement. In modern times, the term is a common South Asian surname for both males and females.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tungipara Sheikh family</span> Bangladeshi family

The Sheikh family of Tungipara is one of the two most prominent Bangladeshi political families, other being the Zia family. The family primarily consists of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana and their relatives. Their political involvement has traditionally revolved around the Bangladesh Awami League.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Banani graveyard</span> Cemeteries in Dhaka, Bangladesh

The Banani graveyard is a cemetery in the Banani neighbourhood of Dhaka. It is one of eight state-run graveyards in Dhaka and with a capacity of around 22,000 graves it is one of the largest graveyards in that city. It covers an area of approximately 10 acres of land and two to three burials take place every day. Banani graveyard is the burial place of a number of notable Bangladeshis, amongst them the victims of the coup d'ètat of August 15, 1975. The graveyard was established in 1973.
