Nava Kerala Sadas was the outreach programme of the Kerala government, where the chief minister and ministers travelled through all assembly constituencies of the state. [1] (lit: Kerala Janakiya Mantri Sabha, with the people) was a mass movement which was held by the Left Democratic Front ("the LDF as short form), senior LDF leader and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan [2] to encourage the public to join hands with Government from Manjeswaram [3] to Thiruvananthapuram, a journey of 589 kilometres (365 miles) over almost 36 days 140 Assembly constituencies.

Aims and objectives of Nava Kerala Sadas

It aims to highlight the achievements of the LDF government so far, plans for a bright future for the state of Kerala. Pinarayi Vijayan and his group of ministers toured 140 assembly constituencies. [4]

After a 36-day journey that began at Manjeshwar, the Nava Kerala Sadas concluded on December 23, 2023 in Thiruvananthapuram, etching a new chapter in the annals of democratic governance. Kerala government claimed that this movement will strengthen efforts to build a new Kerala.

A BharatBenz coach costing ₹1.05-crore (₹10,500,000) was specially built for the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his ministers to use during the 36-daylong Nava Kerala Sadas. [12] [13]

Later, KSRTC started inter-state passenger service with the bus between Kozhikode and Bangalore. [14] [15]

Controversies

Allegations of forcing Champad LP School children to attend the Nava Kerala Sadas surfaced

On November 22: Nava Kerala Sadas as allegations of forcing school children to attend the programme surfaced. [16] The msf kerala, the student wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has approached the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KeSCPCR), seeking the rights body’s attention to an incident related to the Kerala government’s Nava Kerala Sadas According to the complaint lodged by MSF, students at Champad LP school were made to stand under the scorching sun to greet the Chief Minister of Kerala.

Tirurangadi District Educational Officer (DEO) at Malappuram district convened a meeting for the Headmasters in the educational district regarding student participation in the Nava Kerala Sadas. [17]

Over cost of bus to be used (Cost: Rs 1.05 crore)

On November 18: A major controversy revolves around the Kerala State RTC’s special BharatBenz coach, reportedly costing Rs 1.05 crore, designated for the travel of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other Ministers. [18]

Paravur municipality to give ₹1 lakh for the Nava Kerala Sadas

On November 23: Chairperson of Paravur municipality after he agreed to give ₹1 lakh for the Nava Kerala Sadas from the fund of the urban local body. [19]

School wall demolished in Malappuram

On November 24: Another controversy School wall demolished in Malappuram to make way for Nava Kerala bus. [20]

Youth Congress members beaten up, taken into custody for waving black flag

On November 20: Youth Congress members in protest waved black flags at the Nava Kerala Sadas special bus carrying the chief minister and other cabinet ministers at Kannur. [21]

The Pazhayangadi police have registered a case against 14 Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) workers for assaulting Youth Congress (YC) members who were waving black flags at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other Ministers in Kannur, Kerala. [22]

YouTuber attacked at Nava Kerala Sadas

On December 1: another Controversies attack on the YouTuber who came to file a complaint in the Nava kerala audience. Nisar, a native of Malappuram, was beaten up again. Attack of CPIM activists took place inside the Areekode police station compound. Nisar, who was injured in the violence, was treated in a private hospital. [23]

Pinarayi Vijayan is an Indian politician who is the current Chief Minister of Kerala, since 25 May 2016. A member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he is the longest-serving secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the CPI(M) (1998–2015). He also served in the government of Kerala as Minister of Electric Power and Co-operatives from 1996 to 1998. Vijayan won a seat in the May 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election as the CPI(M) candidate for Dharmadom constituency and was selected as the leader of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and became the 12th Chief Minister of Kerala. He is the first chief minister from Kerala to be re-elected after completing a full term in office. In 2022, he also became the longest-continuous serving chief minister of Kerala surpassing C. Achutha Menon who had been the first to remain in office for 2364 consecutive days.

The Kerala Urban Road Transport Corporation (KURTC) was a state-run bus company which started with more than 500 low-floor buses in Kerala. KURTC used to run complete and individual services in Thiruvananthapuram & Ernakulam districts. The remaining 12 districts were divided into 5 clusters ; Cluster I comprises Kozhikode, Wayanad and Malappuram; Cluster II Kottayam, Thodupuzha, and Pathanamthitta; Cluster III Kannur and Kasaragod; Cluster IV Thrissur and Palakkad; and Cluster V Kollam and Alappuzha. COVID gravely affected the profitability and sustenance of this service, and the buses got rusted due to non usage and only 97 were functional out of which 70 were then given to City Circular Bus service. KURTC shut down all operations in 2022. Even their official website www.kurtc.in was closed down, thus signaling the end of a golden era of cheap and convenient transport service for customers.

The Council assumed office on 25 May 2016. The ministry had a total of 19 ministers in the Cabinet at the time of swearing-in compared to 21 ministers in the previous government. Pinarayi Vijayan sworn in as 22nd Chief Minister of Kerala, 12th person to hold this position. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on 3 May 2021 submitted the resignation of the Council of Ministers headed by him to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan after winning a historic victory in the 15th legislative assembly elections by winning 99 of the 140 seats in the Assembly.

He represented the Thiruvambadi constituency of Kerala and was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) political party. He became the first elected MLA to take oath outside the Kerala Legislative Assembly, having taken oath at Lake Shore Hospital in Kochi, where he was undergoing treatment for leukemia, on 29 May 2006.

He currently serves as the minister for fisheries, culture & youth affairs in the second Pinarayi Vijayan government and as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Chengannur constituency. He was also the former Minister for Fisheries, Culture and Youth Affairs in the Second Vijayan ministry.Following a controversial speech in Mallappally in 2022 in which he spoke derisively of the Indian constitution, he resigned on July 6 amid mounting pressure from the opposition. He returned as the minister again on 4 January 2023 after the high court of Kerala rejected petition against him.
