The Congress of the People (COPE) is a South African political party formed in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The party was founded by former ANC members Mosiuoa Lekota,Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George to contest the 2009 general election. The party was announced following a national convention held in Sandton on 1 November 2008,and was founded at a congress held in Bloemfontein on 16 December 2008. The name echoes the 1955 Congress of the People at which the Freedom Charter was adopted by the ANC and other parties,a name strongly contested by the ANC in a legal move dismissed by the Pretoria High Court.
Lebogang Isaac Maile is a South African politician currently serving as Gauteng's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development. A member of the African National Congress (ANC),he has served in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since May 2009 and in the Gauteng Executive Council since 2010.
Kenetswe Norah Mosenogi is a South African politician from the North West. A member of the African National Congress,she has been the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Arts,Culture and Recreation since November 2022 and a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature since May 2019. Previously,she had served as the MEC for Economic Development,Environment,Conservation and Tourism from May 2019 to November 2022. Mosenogi also served as the deputy secretary-general of the African National Congress Youth League from 2011 until 2013.
Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba is a South African politician. She is the current chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education in the National Assembly of South Africa and a Member of Parliament representing the African National Congress. Prior to serving in parliament,she was a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in the Northern Cape provincial government.
Motlalepula Ziphora Rosho is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,she was elected deputy speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature in 2010. In 2012 she was appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development,Environment,Conservation and Tourism in the North West Provincial Government. Rosho was discharged from the executive council in 2014 and then served in the provincial legislature as a committee chairperson until December 2018,when she returned to the executive as MEC for Local Government and Human Settlement. Rosho was appointed as MEC for Finance after the 2019 elections.
The Executive Council of Gauteng is the cabinet of the executive branch of the provincial government in the South African province of Gauteng. The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature by the Premier of Gauteng,an office held since October 2022 by Panyaza Lesufi.
Thandi Moraka is a South African politician who is currently serving as a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature. She was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Arts and Culture in the Limpopo provincial government between July 2018 and October 2022. She is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and in 2022 was elected to a five-year term on the party's National Executive Committee. She formerly served as Deputy Secretary-General of the ANC Youth League from 2015 to 2019 and as a member of the Limpopo ANC's Provincial Executive Committee from 2018 to 2022.

Mmaphefo Lucy "Wendy" Matsemela is a South African politician who was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in the North West from May 2019 to December 2022. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2022. While in the provincial legislature,she served almost continuously in the North West Executive Council,excepting two gaps from 2010 to 2013 and from 2016 to 2018. She resigned from the provincial legislature in December 2022 after Premier Bushy Maape fired her as an MEC.
Ntombikayise Nomawisile Sibhidla-Saphetha is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2011. She was formerly KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Arts,Culture,Sports and Recreation from November 2011 to May 2016,and before that she represented the ANC in the National Assembly from 2009 to 2011.
Modise Casalis "Casca" Mokitlane is a former politician and diplomat from South Africa who served in the Free State Provincial Legislature from 1999 until 2014. He is a former Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) and is known for his short-lived defection to the opposition Congress of the People (COPE) between 2009 and 2014.
Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe is a South African politician,diplomat and public servant who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2004 and in the Free State Provincial Legislature from 2004 to 2008. In October 2008,she defected to the Congress of the People (COPE),a newly formed breakaway party.
Rachel Nomonde Rasmeni is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Council of Provinces from 2009 to 2014 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2009. Under Premier Edna Molewa,she served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health from 2005 to 2009 and as MEC for Social Development from 2004 to 2005. She also served on the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party between 2007 and 2017.
Frans Phenye Vilakazi is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2009,when he did not gain re-election. He also served in the North West Executive Council:under Premier Edna Molewa,he was the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government and Housing from May 2004 and MEC for Roads,Transport and Safety from June 2007. Before that,he was MEC for Transport under Premier Popo Molefe.
Elliot Mandlenkosi Mayisela is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2009. He also served in the North West Executive Council from 2001 to 2007. In July 2007,the leadership of the North West ANC removed Mayisela from his position as Member of the Executive Council (MEC),apparently as a result of factional divisions which pitted Mayisela against Supra Mahumapelo's so-called Taliban grouping. The party also attempted to withdraw Mayisela from the provincial legislature,but their decision in that regard was overturned by the High Court.
Ndleleni Moses Duma was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until his death in 2018. He also served in the National Assembly between 2009 and 2014. He was a Member of the North West Executive Council from 2004 to 2009 during the premiership of Edna Molewa;during the same period,he was convicted on theft charges in connection with his involvement in the Travelgate scandal during an earlier period of service in the national Parliament.
Jerry Dimotana Thibedi is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2010 to 2019 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2009. He was the inaugural Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature between 1994 and 1999 and subsequently served in the North West Executive Council between 1999 and 2009 under Premiers Popo Molefe and Edna Molewa.
Cecilia Mampe Papadi Kotsi,formerly known as Mampe Ramotsamai,is a South African politician who served in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2008 and from 2009 to 2014. During her first term,she represented the African National Congress (ANC),which she had also formerly represented in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. However,in December 2008,she resigned and defected to the opposition Congress of the People (COPE),which she went on to represent until 2014;in the 2014 general election,she disowned the party and campaigned for the ANC.
Lyndall Fanisa Shope-Mafole is a South African politician and former civil servant who was the general secretary of the Congress of the People (COPE) from 2014 to 2019. She led COPE's caucus in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2009 until 2014,when she failed to gain re-election.
Lorraine Mmakgosi "Lolo" Mashiane is a South African politician who served in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2008 and from 2009 to 2014. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) during her first term but defected to the Congress of the People (COPE) for her second. However,ahead of the 2014 general election,Mashiane was among several COPE members who openly denounced the party,ending her parliamentary career.
