Rachel Nomonde Rasmeni (born 17 April 1957) is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Council of Provinces from 2009 to 2014 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2009. Under Premier Edna Molewa, she served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health from 2005 to 2009 and as MEC for Social Development from 2004 to 2005. She also served on the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party between 2007 and 2017.

Early life

Rasmeni was born on 17 April 1957 in the Eastern Cape. [1]

Political career

Rasmeni represented the ANC in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2009. [1] From 2004 to 2009, during her third term in office, she also sat on the North West Executive Council under Premier Edna Molewa. Molewa appointed her to the Executive Council shortly after the 2004 general election, on 30 April 2004, naming her as MEC for Social Development. [2] In a subsequent reshuffle, announced on 23 August 2005, she was moved to a new portfolio as MEC for Health. [3] While serving in that office, in 2007, Rasmeni was elected for the first time to the Central Committee of the SACP; she ultimately served two terms on the committee, from 2007 to 2017. [4]

From 2017 to 2021, she was her country's final resident ambassador to Peru due to the closure of the embassy in Lima. [5]

In the 2009 general election, Rasmeni did not stand for re-election to the provincial legislature but instead was elected as a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces, the upper house of the South African Parliament. [1] The ANC, which was the majority party in Parliament, nominated her to serve as chairperson of the Select Committee on Social Services. [6] At the end of the legislative term, Rasmeni did not stand for re-election in the 2014 general election. [1]

Motlalepula Ziphora Rosho is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress, she was elected deputy speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature in 2010. In 2012 she was appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism in the North West Provincial Government. Rosho was discharged from the executive council in 2014 and then served in the provincial legislature as a committee chairperson until December 2018, when she returned to the executive as MEC for Local Government and Human Settlement. Rosho was appointed as MEC for Finance after the 2019 elections.

Violet Sizani Siwela is a South African politician from Mpumalanga. She is a Member of the National Assembly, where she chairs the Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development, and a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress (ANC). She served in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature until May 2019.

The Executive Council of the North West is the cabinet of the executive branch of the provincial government in the South African province of the North West. The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the North West Provincial Legislature by the Premier of the North West, an office held since September 2021 by Bushy Maape of the African National Congress (ANC).

Sebonta Desbo Mohono is a South African politician who is currently serving as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture and Rural Development since December 2018. Since 2009, she has served continuously in the North West Provincial Legislature and the Executive Council of the North West, including as MEC for Tourism from 2014 to 2018.

Mmaphefo Lucy "Wendy" Matsemela is a South African politician who was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in the North West from May 2019 to December 2022. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2022. While in the provincial legislature, she served almost continuously in the North West Executive Council, excepting two gaps from 2010 to 2013 and from 2016 to 2018. She resigned from the provincial legislature in December 2022 after Premier Bushy Maape fired her as an MEC.

Mantsheng Anna "Ouma" Tsopo was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2014. Between 1994 and 2009, she served almost continuously in the Free State Executive Council and held several different portfolios, including as the Free State's inaugural Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government and Housing from 1994.

Nikiwe Julia Num, also known as Nikiwe Mangqo, is a South African politician who has served as Mayor of the North West's Dr Kenneth Kaundra District Municipality since 2021. She formerly served in the North West Provincial Legislature, representing the African National Congress (ANC) from 2004 to 2008 and then the Congress of the People (Cope) from 2009 to 2014. She has since rejoined the ANC, which nominated her to her current office during the 2021 local elections.

Louisa Lorato Mabe is a South African politician who served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance from 2009 to 2012 and as MEC for Education from 2012 to 2013. Before joining the North West Provincial Legislature, she represented her party, the African National Congress (ANC), in the National Assembly from 2001 to 2009. Premier Thandi Modise fired her from the Executive Council in June 2013 after she was accused of involvement in procurement irregularities.

Elliot Mandlenkosi Mayisela is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2009. He also served in the North West Executive Council from 2001 to 2007. In July 2007, the leadership of the North West ANC removed Mayisela from his position as Member of the Executive Council (MEC), apparently as a result of factional divisions which pitted Mayisela against Supra Mahumapelo's so-called Taliban grouping. The party also attempted to withdraw Mayisela from the provincial legislature, but their decision in that regard was overturned by the High Court.

Ndleleni Moses Duma was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until his death in 2018. He also served in the National Assembly between 2009 and 2014. He was a Member of the North West Executive Council from 2004 to 2009 during the premiership of Edna Molewa; during the same period, he was convicted on theft charges in connection with his involvement in the Travelgate scandal during an earlier period of service in the national Parliament.

Jerry Dimotana Thibedi is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2010 to 2019 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2009. He was the inaugural Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature between 1994 and 1999 and subsequently served in the North West Executive Council between 1999 and 2009 under Premiers Popo Molefe and Edna Molewa.

Oabetswe Johannes Tselapedi was a South African politician who served in the North West Provincial Legislature. He was the second Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2004 and then was the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education from April 2004 until November 2010, when he was fired by newly elected Premier Thandi Modise.

Darkey Ephraim Africa, also spelled Darkie Afrika, is a South African politician and diplomat who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2009. During that time, he served in the North West Executive Council under Premiers Popo Molefe and Edna Molewa. He later served as Consul-General of the South African High Commission in Nigeria.

Howard Debeza Yawa is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature and North West Executive Council. Under Premier Edna Molewa, he served as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works from April 2004 until May 2007 and as MEC for Local Government and Housing from May 2007 until May 2009. After the 2009 general election, he served as MEC for Public Safety under Premier Maureen Modiselle. He was fired from the latter position in November 2010 by Modiselle's successor, Thandi Modise.

Hlomane Patrick Chauke is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2010 and later from 2016 to 2019. In the interim, he served in the North West Provincial Legislature from 2010 to 2014, including as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports, Arts and Culture from November 2010 to May 2012 under Premier Thandi Modise. He failed to gain re-election to the National Assembly in the 2019 general election.

Jan Lodewyk Hoek Serfontein is a South African politician and commercial farmer who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 1997 and then in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1997 to 2009. From 2007 to 2009, he served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment under Premier Edna Molewa.
