Ontlametse Regina Mochware (born 21 June 1960) is a South African politician who served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Culture,Arts and Traditional Affairs from May 2016 to May 2019. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature from January 2016 until May 2019.
A former teacher and school principal,Mochware was the Mayor of Kagisano–Molopo Local Municipality from 2006 to 2014. She resigned from the mayoral office in May 2014 in order to be sworn in to the provincial legislature and to Supra Mahumapelo's North West Executive Council. However,she had not stood as a candidate in the 2014 general election,meaning that her appointment was highly irregular in terms of South African law. She therefore resigned from her new positions shortly after being sworn in to them,and thereafter she served as a political adviser to Mahumapelo until January 2016,when she officially joined the legislature.
Mochware was born on 21 June 1960 in the village of Gamanyai near Ganyesa in present-day North West province. [1] She has a teaching degree and a BA in education and business management. [1] She began work as a teacher in 1980 and became a school principal in 1997. From 2000,she also served part-time as a local councillor in the North West,representing the ANC. [1]
In 2005,Mochware resigned from her job as a principal to work in local politics full-time. The following year,she was elected as Mayor of Kagisano–Molopo Local Municipality;she served in that office for eight years,from 2006 to 2014. [1] During her term as Mayor,she rose through the ranks of the ANC and ANC Women's League in the region. [1]
At the time of the 2014 general election,Mochware was still serving as Mayor of Kagisano–Molopo and was not included on the ANC's list of candidates for election to the North West Provincial Legislature. However,shortly after the election on 23 May,Mochware was formally sworn in as a Member of the Provincial Legislature. [2] [3] This was apparently possible because one of the politicians elected on the ANC's list,Thandi Modise,had declined her seat in order to join the national Parliament –although Mochware's appointment was nonetheless irregular,since legislation required that Modise's seat should be filled by the next candidate on the ANC's party list. [2] In addition,on 27 May,North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo announced that Mochware would join the North West Executive Council as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development, [4] an appointment for which membership in the provincial legislature was a prerequisite. She was sworn in to the Executive Council the same day. [2]
However,later on 27 May,Mochware resigned from the provincial government. The ANC said that her resignation was the "consequence of a legal technicality in order to totally comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act". [2] According to media reports,both opposition parties and sources were suspicious that party leaders had purposefully attempted to bypass electoral legislation in appointing Mochware. [2] [3] ANC sources told the Star that Mochware had been sworn in to the legislature because the seat would otherwise go to Hlomane Chauke,the next candidate on the ANC's party list;Chauke was unpopular with some party officials. [2]
After her brief stint in the legislature,Mochware was appointed as a political adviser in Mahumapelo's office,and she remained in that position from May 2014 to December 2015. [1] In January 2016,she was officially sworn in as a Member of the Provincial Legislature,filling a casual vacancy. [1]
On 8 May 2016,she was appointed to the North West Executive Council in a reshuffle by Mahumapelo,who named her as MEC for Culture,Arts and Traditional Affairs. [5] In addition,in 2017,she served as acting MEC for Public Works and Roads after Madoda Sambatha was fired and before Johanna Maluleke became Sambatha's permanent replacement. [6]
When Job Mokgoro succeeded Mahumapelo as Premier,he retained Mochware in her portfolio in the Executive Council. [7] However,the ANC did not nominate Mochware for re-election to her legislative seat in the 2019 general election. [8] She therefore left the legislature after the election and lost her seat in the Executive Council. [9] Mokgoro subsequently reconfigured her old portfolio as the Department of Arts,Culture and Sports,led by Tsotso Tlhapi;responsibility for traditional affairs thereafter fell under the Department of Cooperative Governance,Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs,under Gordon Kegakilwe. Mochware is married and has five children,three sons and two daughters. [1] She is Christian. [1]
Tebogo Job Mokgoro is a South African politician and academic who served as the 6th Premier of North West from June 2018 until his resignation in August 2021. He was a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature during that time. He is a party member of the African National Congress.
Wendy Joy Nelson is a South African politician from the North West. She was the North West Finance,Economy and Enterprise Development MEC from 2015 to 2018,and the North West Tourism MEC from 2018 to 2019. She was also a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) from 2014 to 2019. She briefly served as the acting Premier of North West in 2018. She was a Member of the National Assembly from 2009 to 2014. Nelson had also been involved in the local politics of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality.
Madoda Sambatha is a South African politician serving as the North West MEC for Health since 2018. He has served as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) since 2014. He was the MEC for Public Works and Roads from 2014 to 2017. Sambatha is also the provincial secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP).
Mothibedi Gordon Kegakilwe was a South African politician and a party member of the African National Congress. He served as the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance,Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs from May 2019 until his death in July 2020.
Boitumelo Theodora Moiloa is a South African politician from the North West serving as the MEC for Social Development since May 2019. She was sworn in as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature in August 2013. Moiloa is a member of both the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party.
Mmoloki Saviour Cwaile is a South African politician who served as the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance,Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs from November 2020 to August 2021. A member of the African National Congress,he has been a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature since February 2019. Cwaile had previously served as the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Premier,Finance,Cooperative Governance,Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs in the legislature.
Motlalepula Ziphora Rosho is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,she was elected deputy speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature in 2010. In 2012 she was appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development,Environment,Conservation and Tourism in the North West Provincial Government. Rosho was discharged from the executive council in 2014 and then served in the provincial legislature as a committee chairperson until December 2018,when she returned to the executive as MEC for Local Government and Human Settlement. Rosho was appointed as MEC for Finance after the 2019 elections.
Patrick Dumile Nono Maloyi is a South African politician who has been Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlement,Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the North West province since November 2022. In August 2022,he was elected Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West,a position he formerly held from 2008 to 2009.
Jonas Sello Lehari is a South African politician who is currently serving as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety and Transport Management in the North West. He formerly served as MEC for Education and Sports Development from May 2016 to May 2019,and before that as Mayor of Moretele Local Municipality. In August 2022,he was additionally elected Provincial Treasurer of the North West branch of his political party,the African National Congress (ANC).
The Executive Council of the North West is the cabinet of the executive branch of the provincial government in the South African province of the North West. The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the North West Provincial Legislature by the Premier of the North West,an office held since September 2021 by Bushy Maape of the African National Congress (ANC).
Thamsanqa China Dodovu is a South African politician who is currently serving as a Delegate to the National Council of Provinces since May 2019. He was formerly the Mayor of Klerksdorp's Matlosana Local Municipality and served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government and Traditional Affairs in the North West provincial government from May 2012 until June 2013. Dodovu is a member of the African National Congress and served as the party's Deputy Provincial Chairperson in the North West from 2011 to 2015.

Since 2009,she has served continuously in the North West Provincial Legislature and the Executive Council of the North West,including as MEC for Tourism from 2014 to 2018.
Mmaphefo Lucy "Wendy" Matsemela is a South African politician who was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in the North West from May 2019 to December 2022. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2022. While in the provincial legislature,she served almost continuously in the North West Executive Council,excepting two gaps from 2010 to 2013 and from 2016 to 2018. She resigned from the provincial legislature in December 2022 after Premier Bushy Maape fired her as an MEC.
Gaoage Oageng Saliva Molapisi,sometimes also known as Oagile Saliva Molapisi,is a South African politician who is currently serving as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works and Roads since December 2018. He previously served as MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management from 2014 to 2016,before spending two years as an ordinary Member of the North West Provincial Legislature from 2016 to 2018. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC).
Keobiditse Evelyn "Bitsa" Lenkopane is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature since 2019. She was formerly the Mayor of Kagisano–Molopo Local Municipality until she was removed by a motion of no confidence in July 2018.

She formerly served in the North West Executive Council between November 2010 and January 2016,when she resigned from the North West Provincial Legislature to become Mayor of Ratlou Local Municipality.
Magome Albanos Masike is a South African politician and businessman who served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health from November 2010 to December 2018,becoming the province's longest-serving Health MEC. He was fired from the Executive Council by Job Mokgoro and did not seek re-election to the North West Provincial Legislature in 2019. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC).
Hlomane Patrick Chauke is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2010 and later from 2016 to 2019. In the interim,he served in the North West Provincial Legislature from 2010 to 2014,including as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Arts and Culture from November 2010 to May 2012 under Premier Thandi Modise. He failed to gain re-election to the National Assembly in the 2019 general election.
