Madoda Sambatha (born 22 October 1975) is a South African politician serving as the North West MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development since 2024. He has served as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) since 2014. He was the MEC for Public Works and Roads from 2014 to 2017 and the MEC for Health from 2018 until 2024. Sambatha is also the provincial secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP).
Sambatha was born on 22 October 1975 in Kwangqondo,Engcobo,in the Cape Province,now the Eastern Cape. He attended Sentube Junior Primary School,Tshapile Junior Secondary School and graduated from Mzikayise Dalasile Senior Secondary School in 1995. [1]
Sambatha later found employment as a mineworker at the Mponeng Gold Mine in 1996. He then joined the National Union of Mineworkers. He was involved in the politics of Gauteng and the North West. In 2000,Sambatha was elected as a councillor of the West Rand District Municipality in Gauteng. He was appointed Mayoral Committee Member for Public Safety and served in the post until 2005. [1]
At the same time,he was elected as an ANC Youth League Regional Executive Committee member in the West Rand,before being elected as a member of the youth league's regional executive in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Region in the North West. [1]
In 2007,Sambatha was elected the provincial secretary of SACP. [1]
Sambatha was elected to the North West Provincial Legislature in the 2014 general election that was held on 7 May and took office as an MPL on 21 May. Premier Supra Mahumapelo appointed him Member of the Executive Council for Roads and Public Works. He was sworn in on 27 May. [2]
On 1 June 2017,Mahumapelo removed Sambatha from the Executive Council. Mahumapelo reasoned that allegations of Sambatha selling land illegally led to his demotion,yet his dismissal was speculated to have partisan undertones. [3] [4] [5] Mmule Maluleke was appointed his successor. [6]
In December 2018,newly elected premier Job Mokgoro named him the MEC for Health. He succeeded long-serving Magome Masike. [7] [8] [9] He remained in the post following the 2019 general election. [10]
Following the 2024 general election,Sambatha was named MEC for Health by the newly elected premier Lazarus Mokgosi. [11]
Sambatha is married to Phumza Sambatha;they have five children. [1]
Tebogo Job Mokgoro is a South African politician and academic who served as the 6th Premier of North West from June 2018 until his resignation in August 2021. He was a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature during that time. He is a party member of the African National Congress.
Wendy Joy Nelson is a South African politician from the North West. She was the North West Finance,Economy and Enterprise Development MEC from 2015 to 2018,and the North West Tourism MEC from 2018 to 2019. She was also a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) from 2014 to 2019. She briefly served as the acting Premier of North West in 2018. She was a Member of the National Assembly from 2009 to 2014. Nelson had also been involved in the local politics of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality.
Mothibedi Gordon Kegakilwe was a South African politician and a party member of the African National Congress. He served as the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance,Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs from May 2019 until his death in July 2020.
Kenetswe Norah Mosenogi is a South African politician from the North West. A member of the African National Congress,she has been the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance since June 2024 and a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature since May 2019. Previously,she had served as the MEC for Economic Development,Environment,Conservation and Tourism from May 2019 to November 2022 and as the MEC for Arts,Culture and Recreation from November 2022 until June 2024. Mosenogi also served as the deputy secretary-general of the African National Congress Youth League from 2011 until 2013.
Boitumelo Theodora Moiloa is a South African politician from the North West who served as the MEC for Social Development from May 2019 until May 2024. She was sworn in as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature in August 2013. Moiloa is a member of both the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party.
Mmoloki Saviour Cwaile is a South African politician who served as the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance,Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs from November 2020 to August 2021. Maape is a member of the African National Congress and a former Robben Island prisoner.
Motlalepula Ziphora Rosho is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,she was elected deputy speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature in 2010. In 2012 she was appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development,Environment,Conservation and Tourism in the North West Provincial Government. Rosho was discharged from the executive council in 2014 and then served in the provincial legislature as a committee chairperson until December 2018,when she returned to the executive as MEC for Local Government and Human Settlement. Rosho was appointed as MEC for Finance after the 2019 elections. After the 2024 election,she became the chief whip of the house in the legislature.
Patrick Dumile Nono Maloyi is a South African politician who served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlement,Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the North West province from November 2022 until June 2024. In August 2022,he was elected Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West,a position he formerly held from 2008 to 2009.
Jonas Sello Lehari is a South African politician who is currently serving as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health in the North West. He formerly served as as MEC for Community Safety and transport Management from May 2019 until June 2024,as MEC for Education and Sports Development from May 2016 to May 2019,and before that as Mayor of Moretele Local Municipality. In August 2022,he was additionally elected Provincial Treasurer of the North West branch of his political party,the African National Congress (ANC).
