Nirmal Singh Mohra is an Indian politician from Haryana. He is a member of the Indian National Congress. [2] He is a four time former member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly.
Singh was born in Sarwara Jat family in Mohra village and has ancestral roots from Shaheedan Misl of Sandhu Jat Sikhs. His ancestors settled in Ambala region which was then under Shaheedan Misl. His father adopted Arya Samaj in Sonipat and worked as a teacher and was renowned as Master Hazara Singh. His family contains both Sikh and Hindu religion people,all are Jats (Jatts). He married Naib Kaur and has two daughters and two sons.
A Zamindar warrior by lineage,Singh has created Hazara Stud Farm,a thriving stud named after his father Hazara Singh. The farm is among the leading stud farms in the country where horses are bred for races across all centers including Delhi,Mumbai,Bangalore,Hyderabad and Mysore.[ citation needed ]
Singh's political journey started with Sanjay Gandhi in Indian Youth Congress. In 1974,he joined Indian Youth Congress.[ citation needed ] In 1976,he became the block Youth Congress president and rose to General Secretary of Pradesh Youth Congress,Haryana in 1980.[ citation needed ] He served as President,State Youth Congress,Haryana for seven years from August 1982 to 1989 and also served as the vice president of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee.[ citation needed ]
He was first elected as Member of the Legislative Assembly winning the 1982 Haryana Legislative Assembly election representing the Indian National Congress party. He won again in 1991 and 1996,and regained it in 2005 to become a four-time MLA from Naggal Assembly constituency. [3] [4] [5]
He organized two mega-rallies at Kurukshetra grounds,Haryana. The Hisaab Lagao Rally was taken on 25 June 2002. The second Hisaab Chukao Rally was held on 9 December 2004. [6] [7] [8]
He re-joined Congress in 1999 and contested again from the same seat in 2000 and 2005 on Congress ticket. He lost to Jasbir Mallour of INLD in the 2000 Assembly election but regained the seat in 2005.
His old constituency was dissolved under delimitation,and he contested from Ambala Cantt. in the 2009 Haryana Election but lost. [9] [10] He lost again in 2014 Haryana election.
In 2019,he contested from Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency as a Congress candidate but lost after polling 3.48 lakh votes. Later in 2019 Haryana Election,he contested as an Independent from Ambala City Assembly constituency after his daughter was denied a party ticket from the adjoining Ambala Cantt. constituency. [11] [12] He lost to the Bhartiya Janta Party candidate.
In 2024 Haryana Assembly Election Nirmal Singh won the Ambala City seat from BJP candidate Aseem Goel. [13] [14]
In November 2019,Singh formed his own party Haryana Democratic Front. [15] Under his leadership,the party formed its state,district,ward and village units in various districts of North Haryana within two years. [16] The new party contested the Municipal Corporation election 2020 in Ambala City and won two corporator seats while their Mayor candidate came third. [17]
In April 2022,Singh along with his daughter Chitra Sarwara,National General Secretary and Treasurer of the party,his Son Udayvir Singh Sonu (National General Secretary and Convenor Youth Front) and team members of the party joined Aam Aadmi Party under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal. In December 2023,he and his daughter Chitra resigned from AAP and are likely to join the Congress party again in January 2024. [21]
In October 1994,he was implicated in a murder investigation and he voluntarily resigned as a Minister of State for Revenue. He was put behind bars for the next two and half years.[ citation needed ] He contested the next election in 1996 from behind the bars as an independent candidate and won. Later,he was acquitted of all charges in February 1997.[ citation needed ]
Bhagwant Singh Mann,better known by his stage name "Jugnu",is an Indian politician,social worker,former comedian,singer and actor who is currently serving as the 17th Chief Minister of Punjab since 2022. He represents the Dhuri Assembly constituency in the Punjab Legislative Assembly since 2022 and is also serving as the state convener of Aam Aadmi Party,Punjab since 2019. Previously,he was a member of the lower house of Parliament from Sangrur from 2014 to 2022.

Exceptions are Giani Zail Singh,the Chief Minister of Punjab from 17 March 1972 to 30 April 1977 belonging to Ramgarhia community that has population of 6 percent and is a part of significant OBC community having population of 31.3 percent in the state and Charanjit Singh Channi who held the position for 111 days from 20 September 2021 to 16 March 2022 and was from Scheduled Caste(Dalit) who have 32 percent population in the state. Other prominent party is Bahujan Samaj Party especially in Doaba region founded by Kanshi Ram of Rupnagar district. In 1992 BSP won 9 seats Vidhan Sabha elections. Also BSP won 3 lok sabha seats from Punjab in 1996 general elections and only Garhshanker seat in 1997 Vidhan Sabha elections. Communist parties too have some influence in the Malwa area. In the 2014 general elections,the first-time contesting Aam Aadmi Party got 4 out of 13 seats in Punjab by winning 34 of the total 117 assembly segments,coming second in 7,third in 73 and fourth in the rest 3 segments. The support for the Aam Aadmi Party increased later in Punjab. The current Government was elected in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and the AAP won 92 out of 117 Assembly seats with Bhagwant Mann as the Chief Minister. The Congress flows down to get only 18 seats.
