No (presented as NO in conjunction with its follow-up album W [2] ) is the twenty-sixth studio album by Japanese experimental band Boris, released 3 July 2020 on the band's label Fangs Anal Satan. [3]
No was written and recorded quickly in March 2020 when Boris entered self-isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [4] Inspired by current international political trends, Boris described the album as "a mirror that gathers and reflects people’s negative energy at a different angle, one that is positive. That is the power and potential of the dark, extreme, and brutal noise music that we have experienced up to this point." [1]
Unlike the lengthy experimental tracks that dominated the band's last few albums, No consists mostly of short, hardcore-based songs. [4] It includes the cover song "Fundamental Error" by 1990s Japanese hardcore band Gudon. [5] [3] Japanese hardcore guitarist Katsumi makes a guest appearance. [6] The album was self-released. [5]
With NO, Boris craft "thrashing and exhilarating" hardcore. [7] It is also seen as a "harsh", "violent" fusion of crust punk and metallic hardcore. [8] D-beat, sludge and thrash also appear, all wrapped in "thick squalling" noise. [9]

Upon its release, No received mostly positive reviews. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, the album received an average score of 84, which indicates "universal acclaim", based on 6 reviews. [10] Sputnikmusic noted the album's differences from its immediate predecessors, which could turn off longtime fans although the album "plays to enough of Boris’ many strengths that longstanding fans will be quick to pounce on it." [12] Pitchfork called No the best Boris album in a decade, squeezing the band's many interests into "these breathless 40 minutes." [4] Treble magazine noted that the album "cuts right through the feedback and drone in the interest of a more direct delivery of thrashy riffs and crust-punk intensity." [13] Post-Thrash noted that the album is likely to satisfy both longtime Boris fans, plus fans of hardcore punk and heavy metal. [7] A reviewer for Metal Storm noted that Boris is still capable of delivering surprising new sounds like those on No, after more than two dozen albums. [14]
In a review for AllMusic, Thom Jurek claimed that "While hardly a political album, No reflects the frustration, anger, fear, and helplessness of the 2020 pandemic in a global zeitgeist. While its stylistic hallmarks are undeniably part of the band's musical signature, here they pay homage to the past while simultaneously reflecting the tense uncertainty of the present and future, directly and consistently, making No the band's strongest, most visionary outing since Pink ." [9]

Thrash metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by its overall aggression and fast tempo. The songs usually use fast percussive beats and low-register guitar riffs, overlaid with shredding-style lead guitar work.
Crust punk is a subgenre of punk rock influenced by the English punk scene as well as extreme metal. Neurosis is an American post-metal band from Oakland, California. It was formed in 1985 by guitarist Scott Kelly, bassist Dave Edwardson, and drummer Jason Roeder, initially as a crust punk band. Chad Salter joined as a second guitarist and appeared on the band's 1987 debut Pain of Mind and then Steve Von Till replaced him in 1989. The following year, the lineup further expanded to include a keyboardist and a visual artist. Beginning with their third album Souls at Zero (1992), Neurosis transformed their hardcore sound by incorporating diverse influences including doom metal and industrial music, becoming a major force in the emergence of the post-metal and sludge metal genres.
Thrashcore is a fast-tempo subgenre of hardcore punk that emerged in the early 1980s. Thrashcore is essentially sped-up hardcore, adopting a slightly more extreme style by means of its vocals, dissonance, and occasional use of blast beats. It is the third Boris album of this title, with the previous ones released in 2002 and 2011; all feature the band exploring hard rock and heavy metal sounds. The band described the album as both a celebration of their 30th anniversary and as part of a continuous evolution in their music. The album was preceded by the singles "She Is Burning", "Question 1", and "My Name Is Blank".
But then, to everyone's surprise, the band released the harsh crust punk record NO in 2020, a violent barrage of metallic hardcore.
