Nobonita Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi journalist, singer, and Director of the Preventing Violence Against Women Initiative at BRAC, the largest non-governmental organization in Bangladesh. [1] [2] [3] She was an Editor of DBC News and a famous television host. [4] [5] [6]

Early life and education

Chowdhury got her Bachelor of Laws at the University of Dhaka. [7] She got her Master's at School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London. [7]

Career

Chowdhury started her career at the Bhorer Kagoj. [7] She worked there till 2000 and then joined Ekushey Television. [8] She has worked for Bitopi, BBC World Services, Ice Media Ltd publisher of Ice Today , and Robi Axiata Limited. [8]

Chowdhury moderated a panel at the Dhaka Lit Fest 2016 called Juddho Sheshe Juddho which discussed Bengali Muslim identity and secularism. [9]

In 2017, Chowdhury was awarded the Anannya Top Ten Award. [7]

Chowdhury joined as the director of the Preventing Violence Against Women Initiative at BRAC in 2019, leaving DBC News. [8] She participated in the Facebook South Asia Safety Summit-2019 in India. [10] She hosted Mastermind Family Bangladesh, the Bangladeshi version of Mastermind (British game show). [11]

Chowdhury is a member of the executive committee of Bangladesh Nari Sangbadik Kendra (A Center for Women Journalist, Bangladesh). [12] She sang at Praner Khela programme in Bengal Shilpalaya. [13] She released an album with Bengal Foundation called Song of Three Mahajans. [14] [15]

After the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the fall of the Awami League government, lawyer Gazi MH Tamim filed a complaint of genocide against Sheikh Hasina and 32 journalists, including Chowdhury, with the Investigation Agency-ICTBD, the investigative arm of the International Crimes Tribunal, on 29 August 2024. [16] Reporters Without Borders condemned the filing of the case. [17]

Personal life

Chowdhury's sister, Nirupoma Rahman, is a singer. [18] The two sisters studied music while growing up. [18] She is separated from her husband and has one son. [19]

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, also known as Karnaphuli Tunnel, is an underwater expressway tunnel in the port city of Chittagong, Bangladesh under the Karnaphuli river. The length of the entire route is 9.39 kilometres (5.83 mi), with the tunnel making up 3.32 kilometres (2.06 mi) of the length. The tunnel diameter is 10.80 metres (35.4 ft). It is expected, over 17,000 vehicles will be able to use this tunnel daily. The cost of the project is estimated at US$1.1B, of which around half is financed by the Exim Bank of China. The Bangabandhu Tunnel is the first underwater road tunnel in South Asia. It is expected to improve the Dhaka–Chittagong–Cox's Bazar highway network. A Chinese company, China Communications Construction Company, was selected to construct it. The tunnel segments were produced in Zhenjiang, China.

Faridun Nahar Laily is a Bangladeshi politician, entrepreneur, freedom fighter, and a former Jatiya Sangsad member from the reserved women's seat of the 12th national assembly. She was previously Member of Parliament in the reserved women's seat, nominated by the Bangladesh Awami League in the Ninth National Assembly. Faridun Nahar Laily is in her third term as the Agriculture and Cooperatives Secretary of the Central Committee of the Awami League. E. A. Chowdhury (1928–2009) was the former Inspector General of Bangladesh Police. Chowdhury was the founding commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Tridib Dastidar (1952–2004) was a Bangladeshi poet. He was born in Patia in Chittagong, to the Dastidar family. Moving to Dhaka in the mid-1970s, he emerged as a bohemian poet. He published six volumes of poetry. Spending his life in loneliness and dire poverty, he died of illness in Dhaka in 2004.

Kalyani Ghosh is a Bangladeshi singer. She was an artist of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the Bangladesh Liberation War. She was awarded the Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh in 2024 for her special contribution to music.

Farzana Rupa is a Bangladeshi journalist and former principal correspondent of Ekattor TV.
