Northwest Harvest is a non-profit organization supporting food banks in Washington state. Northwest Harvest distributes food to a network of more than 370 food banks, meal programs, and high-need schools throughout Washington State.

History

In 1967 a group of Seattle community leaders formed The Ecumenical Metropolitan Ministry (EMM), an interfaith organization committed to identifying and addressing the primary problems of the poor and disadvantaged. [1] Shortly after the formation of The EMM, Boeing's workforce dwindled from more than 100,000 employees to 32,500. [2] By June 1971, unemployment in the Seattle area spiked from 2.9% to 13.1%.

Realizing that hunger was one of the most significant problems facing Seattle and beyond, The Ministry partnered with two other organizations to organize a food bank system, originally known as Neighbors in Need. In October 1970, they opened 34 food banks, originally conceived as "a short-term immediate response to the immediate crisis".

Even as the Seattle area recovered from its employment crisis, widespread need for food assistance remained. By early 1972, the network found itself serving 70,000 people per month. The Reagan administration's 1982 cuts to federal food stamp programs exacerbated this need, and led to further expansion of the food bank system.

In 1980, Northwest Harvest distributed just over 1 million pounds of food. By 2013 the amount of food distributed by Northwest Harvest increased to 32 million pounds.

Source of Food

All of the food and operating funds received by Northwest Harvest comes from individuals, businesses, foundations, and other organizations. [3] Approximately 25% of the food distributed by Northwest Harvest is purchased staples, such as rice, beans, pasta, canned fruit and vegetables, and protein. The other 75% comes from in-kind donations, mostly from businesses and institutions. The food received from food drives "provides… variety… [and] helps break the monotony of the staple food items". [4]

Distribution

Northwest Harvest operates their own distribution centers in Auburn, Spokane, and Yakima. These warehouses allow Northwest Harvest to handle large quantities of food, including perishable items such as fruits, vegetables, and meat. [4] They also partner with distributors in Grays Harbor, Lewis County, Wahkiakum County, and the Emergency Food Network of Tacoma. These organizations often support one another with staff and transportation services to maximize their efficiency. [5]

Cherry Street Food Bank

Northwest Harvest's Cherry Street Food Bank in the First Hill Neighborhood of Seattle is one of the busiest in Washington, providing nearly 1.5 million meals annually. [6]

As a member of Feeding America, Connecticut Food Bank secures food donations from a national and regional network of food donors, retail partners, manufacturers, wholesalers and farms. Connecticut Food Bank supplies food to a network of local agencies and programs serving nearly 270,000 food-insecure individuals of all ages across the six counties of Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, and Windham. In 2019, Connecticut Food Bank distributed enough food to provide nearly 22.5 million meals.

Angel Food Ministries was a Monroe, Georgia, based nonprofit organization that provided a monthly food service to over 500,000 families. The ministry was a nondenominational program located in 43 states across the United States and the District of Columbia, distributing food from 5,200 locations. There were 473 distribution centers in Georgia and more than 1,400 concentrated in Texas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. The headquarters was located in a 16,000-square-foot (1,500 m2) warehouse in Monroe. The ministry employed 220 full-time employees and 500 temporary workers. The program bought food in bulk at discount price and then sold it in family sized quantities, while spreading the word of Christ. The ministry delivered $120 million in direct food assistance to families and nourished over 22 million Americans. In 2005, the ministry received the largest USDA grant ever given to a faith-based organization. The ministry closed in September 2011 as a result of a federal fraud investigation.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Partnership for a Healthier America</span>

The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) is a nonprofit organization created in conjunction with - but separate from - former First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! effort in 2010. PHA works with the private sector to transform the food landscape in pursuit of health equity. Mrs. Obama currently serves as PHA's honorary chair, and alongside Higher Ground Productions, launched the Pass the Love w/ Waffles + Mochi campaign on March 10, 2021, with PHA to raise funds to aid in the distribution of 1 million meals to families in need around the country. Inspired by the Netflix series Waffles + Mochi, the campaign also raises awareness about food equity.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Second Harvest North Florida</span> U.S. nonprofit organization

Second Harvest North Florida (SHNF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Jacksonville, Florida, that performs food rescue and redistribution to partner agencies in one quarter of Florida's 67 counties. The charitable organization has been active for over 30 years.

Food Lifeline is a non-profit organization that supplies food to different food banks across Western Washington. Food Lifeline is responsible for repackaging and delivering food to 275 different organizations that distribute meals to the Western Washington population. Out of all the food distributed to these different organizations, 30% of the meals end up coming directly from Food Lifeline alone. Food Lifeline is part of a nationwide non-profit called Feeding America and assists in collecting food that would otherwise go to waste.

Northern Illinois Food Bank is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that focuses on providing food to those in need in northern Illinois. Partnerships and donors allow for more than 71,000 people to be fed each week through different programs. Northern Illinois Food Bank operates in 13 counties surrounding Chicago. The organization has four distribution centers located in Geneva, Rockford, Park City, and Joliet, which distribute food to pantries who then allocate the food to people.

St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization located in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in 1967 by John van Hengel, St. Mary's was the first modern organization to operate using the food bank model, which spread throughout U.S. and the rest of the world. Today, St. Mary's is recognized as the world's first food bank.

Rethink Food NYC Inc, commonly called Rethink Food or just Rethink, is a non-profit organization based in New York City. The organization was founded to address hunger in the United States by contributing to a sustainable and equitable food system. Rethink collects excess food from restaurants, grocery stores, and corporate kitchens to provide nutritious meals for people living without food security at low or no-cost. The organization expanded its operations in March 2020 to meet growing food demands amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

The Farmlink Project is a United States-based non-profit organization that combats food waste by collecting excess produce from farms and other food donors across America and delivering it to organizations that serve food insecure communities. Since its founding in 2020, the organization has rescued over 130 million pounds of food, distributed to over 400 communities, and grown to a network of over 600 volunteers nationwide.
