The borders of the ceremonial county were created by the Local Government Act 1972 and enclose a population of 1,449,300 and an area of 1,189 square miles (3,080 km2).

Stand Cricket Club, established in 1853, The SCG is situated between Hamilton Road and Higher Lane in Whitefield, Bury, Greater Manchester. The Club were founder members of the North Western Cricket league which formed into the Lancashire and Cheshire Cricket League until 1992 when they became a member of the Central Lancashire League between 1993 and 2004 in which Stand CC had limited success(highest position 4th 1995), moved into the Lancashire County League for the 2005 season. Since joining the LCL the club have won the Walkden Cup (2008), the Hulme Trophy (2009), the 2nd XI Last Six Competition (2010) and the 3rd XI League, the Bryden Trophy. Stand are Founder members of the Greater Manchester Cricket League in 2016.Winning the Second Division as champions and the First Division Title in 2018.
Lancashire County Cricket Club represents the historic county of Lancashire in English cricket. The club has held first-class status since it was founded in 1864. Andrew Lewis Goram is a Scottish former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Born in Bury, Lancashire, England, he started his career with Oldham Athletic and Hibernian, but he is best remembered for playing for Rangers during the 1990s, when he earned the nickname "The Goalie". In a 2001 poll of Rangers fans, Goram was voted Rangers' greatest ever goalkeeper. Goram appeared in 43 international matches for Scotland and was selected for their squads at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, UEFA Euro 1992 and UEFA Euro 1996.
