One and One Is One is the debut studio album by English dance music group Joi, released on 23 February 1999 by Real World Records. [1]

Contents

Background and composition

One and One Is One takes its title from a metaphysical Bengali poem. [2] The album mixes the Farook and Haroon Shamsher's club interests with their regard for ancestral folk roots. [3] It fuses drum and bass, techno, [4] breakbeats and hip hop with traditional Asian. [2] sounds of sitar, flutes and tablas. [4]

Rick Anderson of AllMusic rated One and One Is One 3/5 and said, "...nothing on this album is less than pleasant, but too, not much of it is more than just pleasant." [5] Jane Cornwell of The Independent said, "As with their live work, the album has been crafted to take the listener on a journey." [2] Indian Electronica rated the album 5/5 and said, "Titillating dabs and flourishes of tabla and sitar throughout the album seamlessly help construct Without Zero as a perfectly balanced aural landscape - naturally appealing to mind, feet and heart." [6]

Tad Hendrickson of CMJ New Music Report said of the album, "The auspicious, skillfully executed debut presents even more possibilities to the expanding genre of raga groove." [3] Sarah Pratt of CMJ New Music Monthly thought "Joi's distinctive sound is most compelling..." [4]

Purple Onion is the only studio album by The Les Claypool Frog Brigade, released on September 24, 2002. It followed two live releases by the band, and is the first release of the Frog Brigade's original compositions. While the Brigade regulars are consistent on much of the record such as Jay Lane, Eenor Wildeboar, Skerik and new percussionist Mike "Tree Frog" Dillon, many special guests appear on the album as well. Joi is a British alternative dub/dance music DJ team of Bangladeshi origin, originally composed of brothers Farook and Haroon Shamsher. Haroon died on 8 July 1999, and the remaining brother has continued Joi alone.

His father was a musician, a disciple of Bismillah Khansahib, and a world-renowned shehnai player. Aref grew up with Indian music all around him and fell in love with tabla. Aref has taken traditional tabla performance into a new dimension by integrating it into contemporary urban music, jazz, hip hop and fusion, as well as being a virtuoso in the traditional skills. He is now extending his talents to producing his own album and performing live under his own name, while continuing to tour with Nitin and Shusheela.

<i>Joi Bangla</i> 1971 EP by Ravi Shankar

Joi Bangla is an EP by Indian sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, issued in August 1971 on Apple Records. The recording was produced by George Harrison and its release marked the first in a series of occasional collaborations between the two musicians that lasted until the Chants of India album in 1997. Shankar recorded the EP in Los Angeles, to help raise international awareness of the plight faced by refugees of the Bangladesh Liberation War, in advance of his and Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh shows at Madison Square Garden, New York. Side one of the disc consists of two vocal compositions sung in Bengali, of which the title track was a message of unity to the newly independent nation, formerly known as East Pakistan. The third selection is a duet by Shankar and sarodya Ali Akbar Khan, supported by Alla Rakha on tabla, a performance that presaged their opening set at the Concert for Bangladesh.
