The Optare Vecta was a step-entrance single-deck bus body manufactured by Optare between 1991 and 1997 on the MAN 11.190 chassis.
Launched in 1991, the medium-length Vecta was designed by Optare to fill a gap in its product lineup between the Delta full-size city bus body on the DAF SB220 chassis and the integral MetroRider minibus. Based exclusively on the MAN 11.190 chassis, the first time this chassis had been built with a bus body for the UK market, [2] the Vecta body was constructed with an Alusuisse bolted aluminium frame and shared design elements from the Delta body, including rounded windows, rear panels and a separately mounted destination display. However, the Vecta featured a straight front end that was later reused for Optare's Spectra double-decker bus. [3] [1]
As a result of smaller-than-average wheels being fitted to the MAN chassis, the Vecta had a low entrance step height of 295 millimetres (11.6 in). Two 195 millimetres (7.7 in) gangway steps led to the first five rows of interior seats, followed by another step that took passengers to the next four rows of seats. Options for the interior included carpet trim on the roof and walls, luggage racks and high-backed seats. [1]
The largest operator of Optare Vectas were North East Bus companies Teesside Motor Services, Tees & District and United, taking delivery of a total of 51 between 1992 and 1994. [4] The first two production Vectas were delivered to Teesside Motor Services in early 1992, [5] [6] with Teesside later taking a further six in late 1993, while Tees & District took delivery of 25 Vectas and United took delivery of 18. [7] [8]
Trent Buses were another large operator of the Vecta, taking delivery of 15 in late 1994. [9] [ page needed ] while Reading Buses initially purchased five in 1993, [10] [11] following with orders for nine more between 1994 and 1996. [12] London United subsidiary Westlink, meanwhile, were the only major London bus operator that purchased the Optare Vecta, taking delivery of eight of the type in mid-1995. [13]
The remaining majority of the Optare Vecta's customers were small independent bus and coach operators across the United Kingdom. The most notable of these was Hutchison's of Overtown, who purchased seven Vectas new as well as two former demonstrators between 1993 and 1996. [14] [15] An early adopter, meanwhile, of the Vecta was West Coast Motors, taking delivery of a single example in 1992 for use on town services. [16] Other operators included Black Prince Buses of Morley, who purchased four in 1995 as the company's first brand new buses, [17] R&I Buses of Park Royal, who took delivery of five in 1995, [18] British Bus subsidiary Crosville Cymru, who took delivery of four in 1995, [19] and the Tillingbourne Bus Company, who took delivery of the final four Vectas produced in 1997. [20]

The Switch Solo is a low-floor minibus/midibus with one or two doors manufactured by Switch Mobility in the United Kingdom since 1998. The Solo name is a play on its low-floor status, the manufacturer marketing its vehicle as having an entrance that is "so low" from the floor, namely 200 mm (8 in) with kneeling suspension. In January 2012, Optare announced the end of production for the original Solo design with a modified Solo SR taking over.
The Optare Spectra was a double-decker bus body built on both the step entrance DAF DB250 and low-floor DB250LF chassis between 1991 and 2006.
The Optare Excel was a low-floor full-size single-decker bus manufactured by Optare. Manufactured as an integral bus, the Excel was launched in 1995 as one of the first low floor single-deck vehicles, replacing the step-entrance Optare Sigma. The styling of the body was in keeping with existing Optare products. At the front, a simple flat panel with the Optare name was set between two pairs of twin headlamps, below a very large front windscreen. Approximately 600 were built.
The Dennis Lance was a single-decker bus chassis manufactured by Dennis between 1991 and 2000, replacing the Dennis Falcon. Its low floor variant, the Dennis Lance SLF was built between 1993 and 1996. Between 1995 and 1998, Dennis also built its double-deck variant, the Dennis Arrow, as the replacement of the Dennis Dominator.
The East Lancs Spryte was a low floor single-decker bus body built by East Lancashire Coachbuilders primarily for construction on the Dennis Dart SLF chassis.
The Optare Sigma was a step-entrance single-deck bus body manufactured by Optare between 1994 and 1996 on the Dennis Lance chassis.
The Optare Delta was a single-deck bus body manufactured by Optare between 1990 and 1999 on the DAF SB220 chassis. The Delta was Optare's first full-size transit bus body, with the company having previously built minibus bodies on Volkwagen LT55 and Mercedes-Benz 811D chassis. The Delta was succeeded by the Optare Excel from 1995 onwards, with production of the Delta body ceasing in 1999.
The Optare Prisma was a single-decker bus body that was fitted to the Mercedes-Benz O405 chassis, produced between 1995 and 1998, when it was discontinued in favour of the integral Optare Excel low-floor bus.
The Plaxton Verde was a step-entrance full-size single-decker bus body built by Plaxton between 1991 and 1997. It was built on a rear-engined chassis, the most popular of which was the Dennis Lance which accounted for over half of the Verdes built. The rest were on Volvo B10B, DAF SB220 and Scania N113 chassis.
The Wright Crusader was a single-deck midibus body built on Dennis Dart SLF, Volvo B6LE and Volvo B6BLE chassis by Wrightbus between 1995 and 2002.
The Plaxton Prestige is a low-floor single-decker bus body built by manufacturers Northern Counties and Plaxton between 1996 and 1999.
The Wright Axcess was a series of two low-entry single-decker bus bodies built on Scania bus chassis by Wrightbus. The Wright Axcess-Ultralow was manufactured Scania L113CRL between 1995 and 1998, later succeeded by the Wright Axcess-Floline on Scania L94UB chassis between 1998 and 2001.
The Northern Counties Paladin, also badged as the Plaxton Paladin towards the end of production, is a step-entrance single-decker bus body built by Northern Counties of Wigan, UK, between 1991 and 1998. The replacements for the Paladin are the Prestige and the Pointer as low-floor models for the Paladin LF.
The Northern Counties Palatine was a step-entrance 2-axle and 3-axle double-decker bus body built by Northern Counties from 1988 to 1999 in Wigan, England.
The Wright Endurance was a step-entrance single-decker bus body on Scania N113 and on Volvo B10B chassis by Wrightbus between 1992 and 1997.
The Plaxton Pointer is a single-deck midibus body that was manufactured between 1991 and 2007, predominantly on the Dennis Dart chassis, by Reeve Burgess, Plaxton and latterly Alexander Dennis.
The Alexander Strider was a single-decker bus body produced by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders between 1993 and 1997. The body was available on Dennis Lance, Scania L113, Scania N113, Volvo B10B and Volvo B10M chassis. A common feature of the Strider body is that it has either a single-curvature windscreen or a double-curvature windscreen with a rounded roof dome and a separately mounted destination display.
The Alexander Dash is a step-entrance midibus body built by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders of Scotland from 1991 to 1997. Unveiled by Alexander at the 1991 Coach and Bus exhibition in Birmingham, it was one of the variants of Alexander's AM-type body, also using components from the Alexander PS type, and was usually combined with the Dennis Dart and Volvo B6 step-entrance single-decker bus chassis.
The Alexander Ultra was a low floor single-deck bus body built on the Volvo B10L chassis by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders from 1995 to 1998. It was the right-hand drive equivalent of the Volvo 5000 and was built on license from Volvo Buses.
The Westcourt Group, which owns United Automobile of Darlington, Teeside [sic] Motor Services of Stockton on Tees and District of Middlesbrough, is taking delivery of a further eight OPTARE Vectas in 1994 taking its total to 51.
The MAN-chassis Optare Vecta made good progress in the British market during 1993. Five were delivered to Reading Transport
Since then [Reading] has taken delivery of a total of 87 Optare buses, including nine Spectra deckers and 14 Vecta 10-metre Citybuses.
Tillingbourne also operates five 'P' registered Optare Vectas and four Optare MetroRiders in the 68 strong fleet.
