Out in the World received positive feedback from critics. On Metacritic, the album holds an average critic score of 76, indicating "Generally favorable reviews." [10] On music review aggregator AnyDecentMusic?, the album holds a rating of 7 out of 10 based on 12 reviews. [11] Pitchfork 's Stuart Berman wrote, "[On this album] Watson effectively distills GUM's whole essence into a two-part mini-suite: one half nocturnal cosmic ballad, one half sunrise-summoning soul-jazz groove, the songs reaffirms Watson’s ongoing mission to find the elation in isolation." [12] Reviewing the album on behalf of Under the Radar magazine, Lily Moayeri wrote, "It [the album] sounds like it could be a mixed bag, but Out in the World has a definite flow—and at no point does it become repetitive." [13] Writing for The Line of Best Fit , Matthew Pywell wrote, "Out in the World seeks to question the confusion of modern life yet allows us to breathe by offering much needed escapism from our immediate surroundings." [4] Reviewing for Gigwise, Meg Berridge wrote, "Watson boasts an ability to dip between modern and nostalgic, balancing gentle tracks reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s Relics with bold sci-fi gurgles." [14] Clash 's Shannon McDonagh wrote, "It’s an evocative rush of a listen - if Watson insists on making yet more music outside of his day job, we’re glad it's as fun as this," giving the album an 8 out 10 rating. DIY 's Elly Watson wrote, "His fifth effort is by far his most fun yet," giving the album a 4 out of 5 stars rating. [16] Atwood Magazine 's Ben Niesen wrote, "Out in the World is, as a whole, indicative of the modern psychedelic now: Over-instrumentalized. That makes no sense, but bear with me and all will be clearer by the end of this ramble." [17] Exclaim! 's Chris Hamilton-Peach gave the album a 7 out of 10 score, writing, "Despite such inclinations towards the jaded and cyclical at times, Out in the World boasts enough latitude and flexibility to hook interest." [18] However, Ed Jupp of God Is in the TV criticised the album for its repetitiveness and clash of styles. [19] BPM gave the album a 6.7 rating out of 10 expressing, "There are plenty of lovely moments on this LP, but without a clear structure, it never truly acts as one." [20] Music discovery platform, Sun Genre rated the album 3 stars, writing, "Out in the World is a solid listen for the most part, but it still feels as if Watson is searching for his own unique mark." The album was digitally released by Spinning Top Music in Australia on 30 May 2014. Most of the material from this album had been recorded in 2011, leaving Watson to note that "when it finally came out it felt so good! But it felt so old to me". An LP release of Delorean Highway was restricted to a thousand copies.

In September 2014, Watson recorded this album in London with the assistance of English rock band The History of Apple Pie's Jerome Watson. The thirteen track record was announced in September 2015. It was preceded by the single "Anesthetized Lesson", which was remixed by Australian multi-instrumentalist musician, Kevin Parker, and released in March 2016.

The album was teased on YouTube on 3 November 2016, and was released on 16 November 2016 in Australia by Spinning Top Music. The album was preceded by the single "Gemini." Watson explained that it was "the first song I recorded for the album, and probably the most immediate." It featured a contribution by Sergio Flores on saxophone.

The album was produced, mixed and recorded by Jay Watson himself, with additional drums by fellow Australian multi-instrumentalist musician Kevin Parker, at his home studio. The album is considered to the most consistent record that Watson had released as GUM as of 2018. Talking about the album, Watson said that, "I kind of just don’t really think about the kind of music I’m trying to make anymore as much. I’ve kind of just – it kinda sounds really cliché but I kinda just do stuff and then whatever it is, it is, you know."
