The PSL Reserve League also known as DStv Diski Challenge [1] for sponsorship reason, is the youth reserve team league for the top South African football (soccer) teams in the Premier Soccer League. [2]

History

Establishment

PSL Reserve League was established in 2014 by Multichoice to develop Youth football in South Africa. It has developed many players for the senior teams and some having to represent the national team. Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates the most clubs who have developed young players and become football superstars. The likes of Keegan Dolly who have played in France for Ligue 1 side Montpellier, Percy Tau also played for Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion FC, [3] Sphelele Mkhulise are all the products of Mamelodi Sundowns. Kaizer Chiefs are no strangers in developing young players as they have done so in the past before the Reserve League was formed. Njabulo Blom who now plays in MLS in the USA. [4] Siyabonga Ngezana who plays in Romanian League for FCSB. [5] Orlando Pirates have also have produced a star player of their own Lyle Foster who plays for Premier league side Burnely FC [6]

Format

When the reserve league was formed in 2014, all 16 teams were placed in two groups of 8 teams. Top 4 qualified for knockout stages, quarterfinals, Semi-finals and finals.

That all changed in 2017/18 season, adopting a two-round home and away league basic. All teams to play 30 games, 15 home games and 15 away games. The team with the most points wins the league.

Sponsorship

PSL Reserve League was sponsored by Multichoice Company from 2017/18 season to 2019/20 season, it was known as Multichoice Diski Challenge. In the 2020/2021 Season DStv announced that they were going to sponsor South African Premier Division as well as PSL Reserve League. [7]

Broadcasting

The DStv Diski Challenge is broadcast by Supersport every weekends. Supersport only show 4 matches, 2 on Saturdays and 2 on Sundays. [8]

The 2008–09 Premier Soccer League season was the thirteenth since its establishment. Supersport United were the defending champions, having won their first Premier Soccer League title on the final day of the previous season. The campaign began in August 2008, ended in May 2009. A total of 16 teams contested in the league, 14 of which contested in the 2007–08 season, and two of which were have been promoted from the National First Division.

The 2009–10 Premier Soccer League season was the fourteenth since its establishment. Supersport United were the defending champions, having won their second premier league title in the 2008–09 season. The campaign began in August 2009, and ended in March 2010. A total of 16 teams competed in the league. SuperSport United were crowned champions for the third successive time two matches before the end despite losing to Bidvest Wits (1–2) in the last match.

Eric "Tower" Mathoho is a South African football central defender. He currently plays for Kaizer Chiefs and South Africa.

Khama Billiat is a Zimbabwean professional footballer.

Lebogang Manyama, nicknamed “Kaka” is a retired South African professional soccer player who is the assistant coach of Cape Town City F.C.

The 2020–21 South African Premier Division season was the 25th season of the Premier Soccer League since its establishment in 1996. Mamelodi Sundowns were the three-time defending champions. This season's winner will qualify for the 2021–22 CAF Champions League along with the second placed team. The 3rd placed team and Nedbank Cup winners qualify for the 2021–22 CAF Confederation Cup.

The 2022–23 South African Premier Division from 5 August 2022 to 20 May 2023 was the 27th season of the Premier Soccer League since its establishment in 1996. Mamelodi Sundowns successfully defended the title for the 6th time, having won the title from the 2017–18 season. Sekhukhune United relocated from Ellis Park Stadium to Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The 2022 MTN 8 was the 48th edition of the knockout competition featuring the top 8-placed teams at the conclusion the previous DStv Premiership season and the 15th under its current name.

This current 2022–23 of the South African Premier Division is Mamelodi Sundowns' 27th consecutive season in the PSL League.

This current 2023–24 season of the DStv Premiership is Kaizer Chiefs' 28th consecutive season in the PSL League.

Relebohile Mofokeng is a South African professional footballer who plays as a midfielder and winger for Orlando Pirates.

The 2023 MTN 8 was the 49th edition of the competition featuring the top 8-placed teams at the conclusion of the previous DStv Premiership season and the 16th under its current sponsored name. The competition started on 12 August 2023 and the final match was played on 7 October 2023.
