PS Adelaide was a passenger paddle steamer built for the Great Eastern Railway (GER) in 1880. [1]
The Barrow Shipbuilding Company built Adelaide for the Great Eastern Railway. She was launched on 8 May 1880. [2] She was launched by Mrs. Adelaide Simpson, the wife of Mr. Lightly Simpson, a director of the GER Company. She was the GER's first steel-hulled ship, and its last paddle steamer. She was intended for the Harwich – Rotterdam service.
In 1885 the GER launched its twice-weekly morning service to mainland Europe. A train was scheduled to leave London Liverpool Street Station at 9.00am to Harwich, where it connected with the paddle steamer Adelaide which left at 11.00am to arrive in Antwerp the same evening. [3] There was a corresponding return service from Antwerp on Tuesdays and Fridays, reaching London the same night. The company also offered a daily weekday service which left Liverpool Street at 8.00pm every evening, with a connecting boat service overnight to Antwerp and Rotterdam, with arrivals early the following morning.
In 1896 Adelaide was withdrawn from service. In 1897 Thos. W. Ward hulked her at Preston, Lancashire.
The Great Eastern Railway (GER) was a pre-grouping British railway company, whose main line linked London Liverpool Street to Norwich and which had other lines through East Anglia. The company was grouped into the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923.

Stena Line Holland BV is a subsidiary of Stena Line that operates ferry routes between Harwich and Killingholme on the east coast of England and Hook of Holland and Europort in the Netherlands. The head office is in Hook of Holland in the Netherlands. Apart from during the two world wars there has been a continuous service operating between these two countries, initially by the railway companies serving the east coast of England together with Stoomvaart Maatschappij Zeeland a Dutch ferry company. In 1990 Stena Line had purchased both parts and Stena Line Holland BV came into being.
The SS Yarmouth was a steel-hulled steamship owned by the Great Eastern Railway. She was built in 1903 for use on their cargo service between Harwich, Essex, and the Hook of Holland and Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She was lost at sea with all hands on 27 October 1908.

PS Avalon was an iron paddle passenger vessel built on the River Thames for the Great Eastern Railway in 1864 for their ferry services from Harwich to Rotterdam and Antwerp. Before the end of that year she was bought by British interests to assist with the commissioning of the Confederate iron-clad CSS Stonewall, and renamed City of Richmond. After the war she was renamed Agnes Arkle and sold in Brazil in 1865.
