Padmaja Venugopal (born 1961) is an Indian politician from Kerala and daughter of former chief minister of Kerala, K. Karunakaran. Padamaja was a member of INC until 2024 when she quit the party and joined Bharatiya Janata Party. [1]

Political career

Padmaja entered politics in early 2000s. [2] [3] In 2004 Indian general elections, she contested from the erstwhile Mukundapuram constituency to the Lok Sabha, but lost to Lonappan Nambadan of CPI(M). [4]

She also unsuccessfully contested in Kerala Legislative Assembly elections from Thrissur constituency twice as INC candidate in 2016 and 2021. On 7 March 2024 she joined Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2024 Indian general elections. [5] [6]

Turnout for the election was at 77.12% In the Lok Sabha, INC won by a landslide and its leader Rajiv Gandhi went on to become the Prime Minister of India.
