Paul Anthony Insel (born 1945) is an American physician and pharmacologist. He has been the chief editor of four academic journals and is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and American Physiological Society. His research is primarily focused on G proteins.

Early life and education

Paul Anthony Insel was born in 1945 [1] in New York City to parents H. Herbert Insel and Ruth Leona née  Friedman. [2] He has three brothers, Richard, Jonathan, and Thomas R. Insel. [3] He grew up in Dayton, Ohio and the outskirts of Washington, D.C. He attended George Washington University for two years [4] before attending the University of Michigan, where he graduated with his Doctor of Medicine in 1968. [5] [2]

Career

He completed an internship and residency with Harvard University at Boston City Hospital after finishing his MD; he worked at Boston City Hospital until 1970. [4] [2] He then worked at the National Institutes of Health at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and Gerontology Research Center from 1970 to 1974. His next position was at the University of California, San Francisco as a research fellow and associate professor in pharmacology. [2] Insel joined the faculty of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in 1978, where he has taught and researched to present day. [5] He became a full professor at UCSD in 1987. [4] He is the Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine and one of the co-directors of the UCSD Medical Scientist (MD/PhD) Training Program. From 2017 to 2019 he was a Distinguished Scientist at the Merck & Co. laboratory in San Francisco. [5]

Insel primarily researches G proteins, including G protein-coupled receptors, heterotrimeric G-proteins and G protein-regulated effectors. [5] He succeeded Arthur K. Cho as the editor of the Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2008. He remains the editor as of 2020. [6] [7] He has also been the chief editor of the Journal of Clinical Investigation , Molecular Pharmacology , and American Journal of Physiology Cell Physiology . [5]

Awards and honors

Insel was elected as a fellow of the British Pharmacological Society in 2017. [8] He also has an honorary doctorate from the University of Paris. [9] In 2019, he was elected as a fellow of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He is additionally a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Physiological Society, and is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians. Personal life

His first marriage was to Lola Steinbaum in 1968. [2] He later married Louise née  Rausa, a psychiatric nurse, in 1977. The couple had two daughters and divorced by 1993. [10] [11]

During his time at Hopkins, he made several important medical advancements, especially in the field of hormone extraction. In addition to his laboratory work, he founded several significant scientific journals such as the Journal of Biological Chemistry and the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.

Clinical pharmacology is "that discipline that teaches, does research, frames policy, gives information and advice about the actions and proper uses of medicines in humans and implements that knowledge in clinical practice". Clinical pharmacology is inherently a translational discipline underpinned by the basic science of pharmacology, engaged in the experimental and observational study of the disposition and effects of drugs in humans, and committed to the translation of science into evidence-based therapeutics. It has a broad scope, from the discovery of new target molecules to the effects of drug usage in whole populations. The main aim of clinical pharmacology is to generate data for optimum use of drugs and the practice of 'evidence-based medicine'.

<i>Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology</i> Academic journal

The Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes review articles about pharmacology and toxicology. It was first published in 1961 as the Annual Review of Pharmacology, changing its name in 1976 to the present title. As of 2023, Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology is being published as open access, under the Subscribe to Open model. As of 2023, Journal Citation Reports lists the journal's 2022 impact factor as 12.5, ranking it first of 94 journal titles in the category "Toxicology" and ninth of 277 titles in the category "Pharmacology & Pharmacy".

Ajit Varki is a physician-scientist who is distinguished professor of medicine and cellular and molecular medicine, founding co-director of the Glycobiology Research and Training Center at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and founding co-director of the UCSD/Salk Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny (CARTA). Gabriel Leon "Gabbie" Plaa was an American-Canadian toxicologist. A specialist of hepatotoxicity, he held various administrative position at Université de Montréal from 1968 to 1989, receiving the grade of professor emeritus upon his retirement in 1996. Over the course of his career he was president of several scientific society and served in editorial capacity for numerous scientific journals. Amongst many awards, he was the first recipient of the Society of Toxicology's (SOT) Achievement Award, an award granted to a "promising young scientist".

Dr. Manuel Martínez Maldonado, MD; MACP, an internist and nephrologist, administrator, educator, poet and author, has authored numerous scientific publications and edited several books. His research interests are the regulation of body fluids and the pathophysiology of blood pressure and its effects on the kidneys. He also focuses on the renin angiotensin system, a hormone system that helps regulate long-term blood pressure and blood volume in the body and which is controlled primarily by the kidneys. His clinical research has included polycycstic kidney disease, renal stones and hypercalcemia. Martinez-Maldonado has occupied numerous positions, including Vice President for Research at Oregon Health and Sciences University (1998-2000), President and Dean of the Ponce School of Medicine (2000–2006). JoAnn Trejo is an American pharmacologist, cell biologist, a professor, and also an assistant vice chancellor in the department of health sciences faculty affairs in the Department of Pharmacology at the School of Medicine at University of California, San Diego. She is also the assistant vice chancellor for Health Sciences Faculty Affairs. Trejo studies cell signalling by protease-activated G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). She is also actively involved in mentoring, education and outreach activities to increase the diversity of science.

Jin Zhang is a Chinese-American biochemist. She is a professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry, and biomedical engineering at the University of California, San Diego.

Joan Heller Brown is an American pharmacologist. She is Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She is known for fundamental contributions to the understanding of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) — molecules that span cell membranes, where they transmit messages between cells and their environments — and how GPCRs regulate cell growth and survival, in healthy and various disease states. Many therapeutic drugs work by influencing GPCRs, thus Heller Brown's discoveries have been crucial to their development.

Julie Ann Johnson is an American clinical pharmacist and translational scientist. She currently serves as associate dean for clinical and translational research and holds the Dr. Samuel T. and Lois Felts Mercer Professorship of Medicine and Pharmacology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She is also be associate vice president for research at Ohio State. Johnson comes to Ohio State from the University of Florida, where she was dean emeritus of pharmacy and a distinguished professor of pharmacy and medicine in the Department of Pharmacotherapy & Translational Research. For four consecutive years, she was a Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher in Pharmacology and Toxicology, indicating she was one of the "world's leading scholars in the sciences and social sciences in the preceding decade."

Henry Wood Elliott II was an American physician, pharmacologist, and anesthesiologist. He was the chairman of the Department of Medical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at University of California, Irvine from 1968 to 1976 and the editor of the Annual Review of Pharmacology from 1965–1976.

Ronald Okun is an American physician and pharmacologist. He testified before the United States Congress three times on behalf of tobacco industry in the 1960s and 1970s, attempting to discredit the fact that smoking causes illness. He was also the co-editor of the Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology from 1977–1989. For at least twenty years, he was the director of clinical pharmacology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) and the National Academy of Medicine (NAM)
