Paul Garza Gonzales OLY (born April 18, 1964) is an American former professional boxer, who won the light flyweight gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. [1] [2]
Gonzales was the winner of the Val Barker Trophy for Outstanding Boxer at those Games, after having won a silver medal the previous year at the 1983 Pan American Games.
Gonzales began his professional career on August 11, 1985 and, in only his third fight, captured the NABF Flyweight title by defeating veteran Alonzo Strongbow Gonzalez. He defended his title once, winning a unanimous decision over legendary future Bantamweight Champion Orlando Canizales on July 20, 1986. After losing a controversial decision to Ray Medel for the USBA Flyweight title on June 17, 1988, he again challenged Canizales. This time on June 10, 1990, and for Canizales' IBF Bantamweight belt. In the rematch, Gonzales was stopped by TKO in the 2nd round due to cuts. After two more losses against lackluster competition, Gonzales retired in 1991.
Gonzales tried to run for office, but was defeated. He was a car salesman. Gonzales was the acting president of the Queensland Olympic Council. [3]
Jeff Fenech is an Australian former professional boxer who competed between 1984 and 2008. He won world titles in three weight divisions, having held the IBF bantamweight title from 1985 to 1987, the WBC super-bantamweight title from 1987 to 1988, the WBC featherweight title from 1988 to 1990. He retroactively won a fourth weight division title, the WBC super-featherweight title in 1991, after the WBC recounted his first bout against Azumah Nelson which had been a controversial decision draw. Fenech was trained by renowned Sydney-based trainer Johnny Lewis.
Richard Sandoval is an American retired professional boxer and former Lineal and WBA Bantamweight Champion. Sandoval was a silver medalist at the 1979 Pan American Games in Puerto Rico and was a U.S. Olympian during his amateur career. He's also the younger brother of title contender Alberto Sandoval.
Bernardo José Piñango Figuera is a Venezuelan former professional boxer who competed from 1981 to 1990. He is a world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBA and The Ring bantamweight titles from 1986 to 1987 and the WBA super bantamweight title in 1988. As an amateur boxer, he won a silver medal in the bantamweight division (-54 kg) at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. In the final he lost to Cuba's Juan Hernández on points (0-5).
Omar Andrés Narváez is an Argentine professional boxer. He is a two-weight world champion, having held the WBO flyweight title from 2002 to 2010, and the WBO junior bantamweight title from 2010 to 2014. As an amateur, Narváez represented Argentina at the 2000 Olympics, reaching the round of 16 of the super flyweight bracket.
Steve McCrory was an American boxer, who won the Flyweight Gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. A year earlier he won a bronze medal at the 1983 Pan American Games, as well as the world title at the World Championship Challenge.
Héctor López Colín was a Mexican professional boxer. He challenged for the WBC lightweight title in 1993 and the WBO light welterweight title twice between 1995 and 1999. At regional level he held the WBC-NABF light welterweight title twice between 1992 and 1993, and the WBO-NABO light welterweight title between 1996 and 1997. As an amateur he represented Mexico at the 1984 Olympics, winning a silver medal in the bantamweight division.
Salvatore Todisco was a light flyweight boxer from Italy, who won the silver medal in the light flyweight division at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. In the final he was defeated by Paul Gonzales of the United States. He died in a car accident on November 25, 1990 at the age of 29.
Hugh Russell was a Northern Irish professional boxer who competed from 1981 to 1985. He held the British bantamweight title in 1983, and the British flyweight title from 1984 to 1985. As an amateur, he won bronze medals at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and the 1980 Summer Olympics, both in the flyweight division.
Orlando Canizales is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1984 to 1999. He held the IBF bantamweight title between July 1988 and December 1994.
Orlando Martínez was a Cuban bantamweight boxer, who won the gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Three years later he captured the gold at the 1975 Pan American Games. Orlando was awarded a hotly disputed 3–2 split decision over Great Britain's George Turpin in the 1972 Munich Olympics semifinal before coasting to a comfortable points win over future professional world bantamweight champion Alfonso Zamora in the final to win the division's gold medal.
Pentti Olavi Hämäläinen was a Finnish boxer. He competed at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics and won a gold and a bronze medal, respectively. He won two more bronze medals at European championships in 1951 and 1955. Domestically he won six Finnish titles between 1951 and 1956, two in flyweight, two in bantamweight and two in featherweight division. After the 1956 Olympics he turned professional and won five consecutive bouts. He lost his sixth bout in 1959 and retired from boxing, after which he worked as a mechanic and a policeman. Four of his brothers also competed in boxing at the national level. Pentti Hämäläinen died in 1984, aged 54, of undisclosed causes.
Zou Shiming is a Chinese former professional boxer who competed from 2013 to 2017 and held the WBO flyweight title from 2016 to 2017. As an amateur, Zou is China's most successful boxer of all time. In the light-flyweight division, he won three consecutive Olympic medals, as well as three World Amateur Boxing Championships gold medals in 2005, 2007 and 2011.
Rau'shee Warren is an American professional boxer who held the WBA (Undisputed), and IBO bantamweight titles from 2016 to 2017. As an amateur he won a gold medal at the 2007 World Championships, as well as bronze at the 2005 and 2011 World Championships, all in the flyweight division.
Moon Sung-kil is a Korean former professional boxer who competed from 1987 to 1993. He is a world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBA bantamweight title from 1988 to 1989 and the WBC super-flyweight title from 1990 to 1993. His name is also rendered Sung Kil Moon.

Sulley Shittu is a Ghanaian amateur fly/bantamweight, and professional bantamweight boxer of the 1960s and 1970s who as an amateur represented Ghana at flyweight in the Boxing at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, losing to John McCafferty of the Republic of Ireland, won silver at the 1965 All-Africa Games in Brazzaville, won a gold medal at flyweight in the Boxing at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, represented Ghana at bantamweight in the Boxing at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, losing to Horst Rascher of West Germany, and won a gold medal at bantamweight in the Boxing at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland and as a professional won the African Boxing Union (ABU) bantamweight title, and Commonwealth bantamweight title.
Lü Bin is a Chinese professional boxer who challenged for the WBA light-flyweight title in 2018. As an amateur he won a bronze medal at the 2013 Asian Amateur Championships in the light-flyweight division and represented China at the 2016 Summer Olympics, reaching the round of 16.
