Paul Marsden is a fictional character in the British ITV soap opera, Emmerdale . He was played by Matthew Booth and made his first appearance on 10 March 2003. The character was killed off in July 2004, following an altercation with Carl King (Tom Lister).

A character is a person or other being in a narrative. The character may be entirely fictional or based on a real-life person, in which case the distinction of a "fictional" versus "real" character may be made. Derived from the ancient Greek word χαρακτήρ, the English word dates from the Restoration, although it became widely used after its appearance in Tom Jones in 1749. From this, the sense of "a part played by an actor" developed. Character, particularly when enacted by an actor in the theatre or cinema, involves "the illusion of being a human person". In literature, characters guide readers through their stories, helping them to understand plots and ponder themes. Since the end of the 18th century, the phrase "in character" has been used to describe an effective impersonation by an actor. Since the 19th century, the art of creating characters, as practiced by actors or writers, has been called characterisation.

Television in the United Kingdom started in 1936 as a public service which was free of advertising. Currently, the United Kingdom has a collection of free-to-air, free-to-view and subscription services over a variety of distribution media, through which there are over 480 channels for consumers as well as on-demand content. There are six main channel owners who are responsible for most material viewed. There are 27,000 hours of domestic content produced a year at a cost of £2.6 billion. Since 24 October 2012, all television broadcasts in the United Kingdom have been in a digital format, following the end of analogue transmissions in Northern Ireland. Digital content is delivered via terrestrial, satellite and cable, as well as over IP.

ITV (TV network) TV network in the United Kingdom

ITV is a British free-to-air television network with its headquarters in London, it was launched in 1955 as Independent Television under the auspices of the Independent Television Authority to provide competition to BBC Television, that was established in 1932. ITV is also the oldest commercial network in the UK. Since the passing of the Broadcasting Act 1990, its legal name has been Channel 3, to distinguish it from the other analogue channels at the time, namely BBC 1, BBC 2 and Channel 4. In part, the number 3 was assigned because television sets would usually be tuned so that the regional ITV station would be on the third button, with the other stations being allocated to the number within their name.

Character creation and development

In March 2003, a new family, the Marsdens, were introduced to the village. Their moving van broke down, but the residents rallied round to help them settle in.

Headstrong Siobhan Marsden and Paul had married in Las Vegas, and Paul's mother Frances did not approve of their relationship. When asked if Paul was seen as "not wearing the trousers in the relationship," actor Matthew Booth said, "Paul is a bit under the thumb, and I'd like to think I'm not. Then again, I bet every bloke thinks that! I'd probably not go for a girl like Siobhan because she can be quite a handful." [1]

They were the only survivors when the family was axed at the end of 2003. Producer Steve Frost said, "However, Paul and Siobhan Marsden will be staying on and the young couple have got some trying times ahead."

Storylines

When Paul and his family arrived in the village, Paul initially worked as a porter, alongside his nurse wife Siobhan. Paul actually wanted to be a carpenter, and did some jobs with Syd Woolfe, but he finally found a full-time job at the post office, beating out Marlon Dingle.

When Paul's family moved away, Siobhan and Paul stayed in Victoria Cottage. They seemed to have many happy years ahead, but tragedy struck when Paul went to fix a roof with Carl King. They'd got into a fight the day before over a package Carl hadn't wanted Paul to deliver. They made up and went to the roof. Paul jokingly tossed some tools to Carl. Carl tossed some back, but when Paul tried to catch them, he fell off the roof. A horrified Carl called his brothers, who moved Paul's corpse to his garden. Siobhan found him and cradled his lifeless body in her arms. [2] No one ever found out about the true nature of Paul's death.

Paul had wanted nothing more than to be a father. After his death, Siobhan found out she was pregnant.
