The Peak 100 was a side-by-side two-seat high performance sailplane, featuring a steel-framed fuselage, designed in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. Only one was built.
The Peak 100 was designed by Harry Midwood of the Bedford Sailplane Design Group and the only prototype was built by Peak Sailplanes at Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire. Seating two side-by-side, it was intended to be suitable for training at elementary and advanced levels and to have a performance high enough for competitions. [1]
The Peak 100 had a cantilever, shoulder-mounted, long-span wing of thick section and straight tapered plan, constructed in three parts with a 28 ft (8.53 m) centre section and a pair of 16 ft (4.88 m) outer panels. It was built around two spruce spars with birch plywood webs and had stressed birch ply skin back to the rear spar, with fabric covering behind. [1] [2] [3] The outer panels carried fabric-covered, long span, aerodynamically balanced ailerons and a pair of DFS-type spoilers which extended above and below the wing were mounted on the centre section rear spar. The fuselage of the Peak 100 had a welded steel tube structure, fabric covered apart from glass fibre nose and centre section fairings. [2] Details of the steel structure were designed by Aviation and Engineering Projects Ltd [4] and the wide, forward-sliding, one-piece canopy [5] was made by English Electric. [6] The original nose was very blunt and rounded; [1] [7] the flat-sided fuselage tapered towards the tail. An all-moving tailpane was mounted at the base of the fin. The tailplane was straight tapered, mostly on its trailing edge; it had a wooden structure, with a ply-covered leading edge and fabric elsewhere. It was fitted with anti-balance and trim tabs. The fin and horn-balanced rudder were also straight edged apart from a slightly rounded rudder top; the rudder was short, ending above the tailplane. Fin and rudder both had wooden structures, the former ply skinned and the latter mostly fabric covered. [2]
The Peak 100's undercarriage was a little unusual in having two wheels in tandem rather than the more common monowheel plus skid arrangement. It was claimed this made ground handling under heavy conditions easier. There was also a small tailskid. [2]
The first flight had been expected in 1962 [1] but was delayed until 5 February 1963, piloted by Harry Midwood. [2] This took place from Cranfield, Bedfordshire. Bad weather prevented much flying and so the aircraft went back to Peak Sailplanes for a lengthening and lowering of the nose, giving it a slightly more pointed look. [2] Serious testing resumed at Long Mynd that Easter [2] and was ongoing in August. [5] It received its BGA certificate of airworthiness no. BGA 1140. [8]
Early in its testing programme the Peak 100 made its first competitive appearance at the 1963 National Gliding Championships at Lasham. Two-seaters were not expected to perform as well as the more numerous single-seaters and both the Peak and the Slingsby Capstan finished well down the rankings. [9]
Despite early plans for production at two separate factories, [4] the prototype was the only Peak 100 built. [8]

The Slingsby T.43 Skylark 3 was a single seat Open Class sailplane developed from the Skylark 2 with an extended wingspan. It won the 1960 World Gliding Championships.
The Slingsby T.50 Skylark 4 was a British single seat competition glider built by Slingsby Sailplanes in the early 1960s. It sold in numbers and had success at national, though not world level competition.

The VTC Delfin is a competition single seat Standard class glider designed and built in Yugoslavia in the 1960s. It had some success in national competitions and went into small scale production.
The DFS Rhönsperber, otherwise known as the Schweyer Rhönsperber or Jacobs Rhönsperber was a single seat competition glider designed in Germany by Hans Jacobs and first flown in 1935. For several years it was regarded as the best German sailplane and about one hundred were built.
The CVT2 Veltro was an Italian competition glider built in the mid-1950s. Its advanced design incorporated a laminar flow wing, T-tail, retracting undercarriage and a reclining seat to reduce parasitic drag.

The IIL IS-10 was a high-performance, single-seat glider, designed and built in Romania in the early 1960s. It was the first Romanian aircraft to use laminar flow airfoils.
The IIL IS-11 was an aerobatic, single seat glider, designed and built in Romania in 1959. It was built in small numbers.
The IFIL-Reghin RG-5 Pescăruș or CIL Reghin RG-5 Pescăruș was a Romanian single seat sailplane built in the 1950s. Twenty six were constructed for gliding clubs.
The RRG Professor was a very early soaring glider and the first to use a variometer for finding thermals. It was designed by Alexander Lippisch in Germany, first flying in 1928. The Professor was widely built by both flying clubs and factories.
The Schleicher Poppenhausen named after the town of Poppenhausen was a two-seat glider, available as a dual control advanced trainer, produced in Germany from 1928.
The Schneider ES-54 Gnome was an experimental low cost glider with a laminar flow but low aspect ratio wing, built in Australia in the mid-1950s. Its performance was predictably poor and only one was completed.
The Schneider ES49 is a two-seat glider trainer, designed, first flown in late August 1951 and commercially produced in Germany but later built from plans by gliding clubs in Australia. A major redesign there led to the ES49B Kangaroo.
