Penajam is a town and the administrative capital of Penajam North Paser Regency, in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It was previously known as Balikpapan Seberang (lit. "opposite of Balikpapan") before 13 October 1987, when it was transferred from the namesake city to Pasir Regency by government regulation number 21. [1]
Penajam has a tropical rainforest climate (Af) with heavy rainfall year-round.

East Kalimantan is a province of Indonesia. Its territory comprises the eastern portion of Borneo. It had a population of about 3.03 million at the 2010 census, 3.42 million at the 2015 census, and 3.766 million at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 4,030,488. Paser Regency is the southernmost regency (kabupaten) within the East Kalimantan province of Indonesia. It was created in 1959, originally spelt "Pasir Regency", but renamed "Paser" in 2007; however its northeastern districts were split off on 10 April 2002 to form the new Penajam North Paser Regency. The residual regency covers an area of 11,603.94 km2, and it had a population of 230,316 at the 2010 Census and 275,452 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid-2023 was 303,424. Penajam North Paser Regency or Penajam–North Paser Regency, is a regency in the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan. Its administrative centre is the town of Penajam. The area which now forms Penajam North Paser was part of the Paser Regency until its creation as a separate regency on 10 April 2002. It covers an area of 3,333.06 km2 and it had 142,922 inhabitants at the 2010 census and 178,681 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid-2023 was 196,566. Penajam North Paser Regency has the smallest area among the seven regencies in East Kalimantan province.

The Indonesia Masters is an international badminton tournament in BWF World Tour Super 500. Formerly known as the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold, it was first held in 2010 in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, and change its venue in different cities every year. The tournament categorized as BWF Grand Prix Gold event, and offered total prize money of US$120,000. The tournament changed its title to Indonesian Masters in 2014. Since 2018 it is held at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta and offers prize money of US$350,000. In 2021, the tournament got upgraded from a Super 500 to a Super 750.

Sepaku is a district of Penajam North Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. As of 2023, it was inhabited by 40,322 people, an increase from 39,738 people in 2022, and currently has the total area of 1,172.36 km2. It was split from Penajam on 11 June 1996. Its district seat is located at the village of Tengin Baru.
