Perry is an unincorporated community in Union County, Oregon, United States. It is located five miles west of La Grande on the Grande Ronde River and Interstate 84. [1] The town was originally named Stumptown, but was later renamed in honor of an early railroad dispatcher in La Grande. [1] [2]

Perry is located at 45°20′53″N118°10′01″W / 45.348°N 118.167°W / 45.348; -118.167 and has an elevation of 2,987 feet (910 meters). [3]

Perry came into existence in 1890, when the Smith-Stanley Lumber Company built a sawmill in the area. [2] A post office was established in the same year. [2] The mill was sold to Charley and Jim Mimnaugh and again in 1900 to C.W. Nibley and George Stoddard, who renamed the mill he Grande Ronde Lumber Company. [2] In 1927, the Grande Ronde Lumber Company merged with the Stoddard Lumber Company of Baker City and moved across the valley to Pondosa, taking most of the town with it. [2] The post office was discontinued in 1931. [2]

The Sumpter Valley Railway, or Sumpter Valley Railroad, is a 3 ft narrow gauge heritage railroad located in Baker County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. Built on a right-of-way used by the original railway of the same name, it carries excursion trains on a roughly 5-mile (8.0 km) route between McEwen and Sumpter. The railroad has two steam locomotives and several other pieces of rolling stock. Passenger excursion trains operate on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through the end of September.

The Grande Ronde Valley is a valley in Union County in northeastern Oregon, United States. It is surrounded by the Blue Mountains, and is drained by the Grande Ronde River. La Grande is its largest community. The valley is 35 miles (56 km) long, north to south, from Pumpkin Ridge to Pyles Canyon, and 15 miles (24 km) wide, east to west, from Cove to the Grande Ronde River's canyon. Its name, fittingly, means, "great circle."

He was also an active leader in several timber-related industry groups and contributed to selected education and religious institutions.
