Sir Curtly Elconn Lynwall Ambrose KCN is an Antiguan former cricketer who played 98 Test matches for the West Indies. Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time,he took 405 Test wickets at an average of 20.99 and topped the ICC Player Rankings for much of his career to be rated the best bowler in the world. His great height—he is 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 m) tall—allowed him to make the ball bounce unusually high after he delivered it;allied to his pace and accuracy,it made him a very difficult bowler for batsmen to face. A man of few words during his career,he was notoriously reluctant to speak to journalists. He was chosen as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1992;after he retired he was entered into the International Cricket Council Hall of Fame and selected as one of West Indies all-time XI by a panel of experts.
The South Africa men's national cricket team,also known as the Proteas,represents South Africa in men's international cricket and is administered by Cricket South Africa (CSA). South Africa is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Its nickname derives from South Africa's national flower,Protea cynaroides,commonly known as the "King Protea".
Shaun Maclean Pollock is a South African cricket commentator and former cricketer,who was captain in all formats of the game. A bowling all-rounder,Pollock along with Allan Donald formed a bowling partnership for many years. From 2000 to 2003 he was the captain of the South African cricket team,and also played for Africa XI,World XI,Dolphins and Warwickshire. He was chosen as the Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2003. Pollock was a member of the South Africa team that won the 1998 ICC KnockOut Trophy,the only ICC trophy the country has won till date.
Malcolm Denzil Marshall was a Barbadian cricketer. Primarily a fast bowler,Marshall is widely regarded as one of the greatest and one of the most accomplished fast bowlers of the modern era in Test cricket. He is often acknowledged as the greatest West Indian fast bowler of all time,and certainly one of the most complete fast bowlers the cricketing world ever saw. His Test bowling average of 20.94 is the best of anyone who has taken 200 or more wickets. He achieved his bowling success despite being,by the standards of other fast bowlers of his time,a short man –he stood at 180 cm,while most of the great quicks have been well above 183 cm and many great West Indian fast bowlers,such as Joel Garner,Curtly Ambrose,and Courtney Walsh,were 197 cm or above. He generated fearsome pace from his bowling action,with a dangerous bouncer. He also statistically went on to become the most successful Test match bowler of the 1980s with 235 wickets with an average of 18.47 within a time period of just five years. Marshall was a part of the West Indies team that reached the 1983 Cricket World Cup Final,but lost to India by 43 runs.
Robert Graeme Pollock is a former cricketer for South Africa,Transvaal and Eastern Province. A member of a famous cricketing family,Pollock is widely regarded as one of South Africa's greatest ever cricketers,and as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. Despite Pollock's international career being cut short at the age of 26 by the sporting boycott of South Africa,and all but one of his 23 Test matches being against England and Australia,the leading cricket nations of the day,he broke a number of records. His completed career Test match batting average of 60.97 remains the third best behind Sir Don Bradman and Adam Voges.
Barry Anderson Richards is a former South African first-class cricketer. A right-handed "talent of such enormous stature",Richards is considered one of South Africa's most successful batsmen. He was able to play only four Test matches –all against Australia –before South Africa's exclusion from the international scene in 1970. In that brief career,against a competitive Australian attack,Richards scored 508 runs at the high average of 72.57. Richards' contribution in that series was instrumental in the 4–0 win that South Africa inflicted on the side,captained by Bill Lawry. His first century,140,was scored in conjunction with Graeme Pollock's 274 in a famous 103-run partnership. Mike Procter,whose South African and English career roughly paralleled that of Richards,was prominent in that series as a bowler.
Clement"Clem" Hill was an Australian cricketer who played 49 Test matches as a specialist batsman between 1896 and 1912. He captained the Australian team in ten Tests,winning five and losing five. A prolific run scorer,Hill scored 3,412 runs in Test cricket—a world record at the time of his retirement—at an average of 39.21 per innings,including seven centuries. In 1902,Hill was the first batsman to make 1,000 Test runs in a calendar year,a feat that would not be repeated for 45 years. His innings of 365 scored against New South Wales for South Australia in 1900–01 was a Sheffield Shield record for 27 years. The South Australian Cricket Association named a grandstand at the Adelaide Oval in his honour in 2003 and he was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2005.Hill is regarded as one of the best batsman of his era.
Sir Alec Victor Bedser was an English professional cricketer,primarily a medium-fast bowler. He is widely regarded as one of the best English cricketers of the 20th century.
Richard Charles Motz was a New Zealand cricketer. A right-arm fast bowler and hard-hitting lower order batsman,Motz played 32 Test matches for the New Zealand national cricket team between 1961 and 1969. He was the first bowler for New Zealand to take 100 wickets in Test cricket.
In the 1970 English cricket season,a scheduled South African tour was cancelled for political reasons. As this meant there would be no international cricket in England that season,a Rest of the World team was assembled to play a series of five-day matches against England. At the time,they were played as Test matches,but that status was later revoked by the International Cricket Conference (ICC) and they are now termed unofficial Tests,though still officially first-class matches.
Derrick John"Jackie" McGlew was a cricketer who played for Natal and South Africa. He was educated at Merchiston Preparatory School and Maritzburg College,where he was Head Dayboy Prefect and captain of both cricket and rugby in 1948.
Arthur Dudley Nourse was a South African Test cricketer. Primarily a batsman,he was captain of the South African team from 1948 to 1951.
Dale Willem Steyn is a South African former professional cricketer who played for the South African cricket team. He is regarded by many as the greatest bowler of the Modern Era. During the 2007–08 season,Steyn achieved a tally of 78 wickets at an average of 16.24,and was subsequently rewarded with the ICC 2008 Test Cricketer of the Year Award. He was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2013,and the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for the year 2013 in 2014's Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. He was featured in Wisden Cricketers of the Decade at the end of 2019. He also was included in the ICC Test Team of the Decade at the end of 2020.
Douglas Thomas Ring was an Australian cricketer who played for Victoria and for Australia in 13 Test matches between 1948 and 1953. In 129 first-class cricket matches,he took 426 wickets bowling leg spin,and he had a top score of 145 runs,which was the only century of his career.
Trevor Leslie Goddard was a South African cricketer. A left-handed all-rounder,he played 41 Test matches for South Africa from 1955 to 1970. He captained the young South African team on its five-month tour of Australia and New Zealand in the 1963–64 season,levelling the series with Australia,and was also captain in 1964–65 against England in South Africa.
Cuan Neil McCarthy was a South African cricketer who played in fifteen Test matches from 1948 to 1951.
Sydney Frank Burke was a South African cricketer who played in two Test matches,one in each of 1962 and 1965.
The New Zealand national cricket team toured South Africa from October 1961 to February 1962 and played a five-match Test series against the South Africa national cricket team. The series was drawn 2–2,with New Zealand's victory in the third Test the team's first Test match win outside their home country. New Zealand captain John Reid scored a total of 1,915 runs during the tour,setting a record for the most runs scored in South Africa by a touring batsman. The tour was the second to South Africa by a team from New Zealand,the previous tour having taken place in 1953–54.
Ravenor Nicholson is a former South African cricketer,who played four seasons of first-class cricket for Natal cricket team. A right-handed batsman and medium pace bowler,his only first-class half century was 89 not out for Natal B against Transvaal B in December 1967. Nicholson's best bowling came in the following match against Griqualand West,taking five wickets in each innings,finishing with match figures of 10/63. Nicholson is the cousin of Test match brothers Peter and Graeme Pollock. His brother Christopher played one first-class match for South African Universities in 1967.
The South African Fezela XI was a team of young South African cricketers who toured England in 1961 under the captaincy of the Test player Roy McLean. Several of the team later went on to play leading parts in the revival of South Africa’s cricket fortunes in the 1960s.
