Sir Peter Thomas Wanless, CB (born 25 September 1964) is an English executive and former civil servant. Since 2013,he has been the chief executive officer of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). In June 2022,he was appointed President of Somerset County Cricket Club. In July 2014,he was appointed by the British government to head a review into historical sex abuse claims.
Wanless was born on 25 September 1964. [1] He was educated at Sheldon School,then a comprehensive school in Chippenham,Wiltshire. [2] He then studied International History and Politics at the University of Leeds,graduating with a BA degree in 1986. [3] [2] He has since studied on the Advanced Management Programme at Insead. [3] [2]
After joining the Civil Service,he held a variety of posts at the HM Treasury,including Head of Private Finance Policy,and Principal Private Secretary to three Cabinet Ministers. [4] including Michael Portillo,both when Portillo was Chief Secretary to the Treasury and later as Secretary of State for Employment. [5] Wanless later held senior positions within the Department for Education and Skills and its successor the Department for Children,Schools and Families, [2] [6] including Director of School Performance and Reform and Director of Strategy and Communications. Wanless was CEO of the Big Lottery Fund between February 2008 and May 2013. [2] Since June 2013,he has been the chief executive officer of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). [7] He was a non-executive director of The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT),which operates academy schools in South East England. [8] He is currently a Trustee of the 5Rights Foundation and a member of the advisory board of the UK Government's National Leadership Centre. [9]
In July 2014,Home Secretary Theresa May announced that he would be leading a review into historical sex abuse claims. [10] [11] His report,written with Richard Whittam QC,was published in November 2014. It "found nothing to support a concern that files had been deliberately or systematically removed or destroyed to cover up organised child abuse",but also said that it was "not possible to say whether files were ever removed or destroyed to cover up or hide allegations of organised or systematic child abuse by particular individuals because of the systems then in place". Married with one son,the family live in Seal,Kent. [11] Wanless is a lifelong supporter of Somerset County Cricket Club where he serves on the committee. [13] He describes himself as a "fan of jangly guitars,indie pop,Somerset cricket,Borgen....". [14] In June 2022,Wanless was appointed President of Somerset County Cricket Club. [15]
Wanless was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 2007 New Year Honours for his role as Director of School Performance and Reform in the Department for Education and Skills. [16] [17] He was knighted in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to children,young people and the charitable sector. [18]

Operation Yewtree was a British police investigation into sexual abuse allegations,predominantly the abuse of children,against the English media personality Jimmy Savile and others. The investigation,led by the Metropolitan Police Service (Met),started in October 2012. After a period of assessment,it became a full criminal investigation,involving inquiries into living people,notably other celebrities,as well as Savile,who had died the previous year.

Giving Victims a Voice is a report published in January 2013,relating to allegations of sexual abuse made against English DJ and BBC Television presenter Jimmy Savile (1926–2011) as part of the Operation Yewtree criminal investigation. It was initiated as a result of publicity surrounding the Jimmy Savile sexual abuse scandal. The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) jointly produced this report. It marked the end of investigations made under the operation regarding Savile alone.
A dossier on paedophiles allegedly associated with the British government was assembled by the British Member of Parliament Geoffrey Dickens,who handed it to the then-Home Secretary,Leon Brittan,in 1984. Kids Can Say No!,stylized as Kids Can Say No, is a 1985 British short educational film produced and directed by Jessica Skippon and written by Anita Bennett. It is intended to teach children between ages five and eight how to avoid situations where they might be sexually abused,how to escape such situations,and how to get help if they are abused. In the film,Australian celebrity Rolf Harris is in a park with a group of four children and tells them about proper and improper physical intimacy,which he calls "yes" and "no" feelings. The film has four role-playing scenes in which children encounter paedophiles,with Harris and the children discussing each scene.
