Phaktanglung is a Rural municipality (Gaunpalika) located in Taplejung District in Province No. 1 of eastern Nepal. The local body was formed by merging seven previous VDCs namely Sawadin, Khejenim, Linkhim, Ikhabu, Tapethok, Lelep, Olangchungkhola. Currently, it has a total of 7 wards. The population of the rural municipality is 12,017 according to the 2011 Nepal census and total area of the rural council is 1,858.51 square kilometres (717.57 sq mi) which is the 3rd largest rural council of Nepal. It is the 1st largest rural council of Province No. 1.

Geography

The whole rural municipality is a part of protected area which is called Kanchenjunga Conservation Area [2] comprises cultivated lands, forests, pastures, rivers, high altitude lakes and glaciers.

Phaktanglung RM falls under Taplejung 1 (parliamentary constituency) and Taplejung 1(B) (provincial) constituency.

Demography

The total population of Phaktanglung RM is 12,017 in which female comprises 6,137 and male comprises 5,880. There are 2,525 households in the RM. [3]

It is located to the north of Tamor River in the mountainous area in the northwest of Taplejung District bordering Tibet, China. Lately the river flowing next to the village is gradually expanding towards the village posing a serious threat of submerging the village.

Phidim Municipality is the headquarters of the Panchthar District in the Koshi Province of eastern Nepal. Phidim was upgraded to a 'municipality' from a 'village', when a development committee merged with other VDCs - including the Phidim, Chokmagu and Siwa villages - on May 18, 2014. It offers a route for trekkers and locals, who travel to and from the Taplejung district bordering with the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is a protected area in the Himalayas of eastern Nepal that was established in 1997. It covers 2,035 km2 (786 sq mi) in the Taplejung District and comprises two peaks of Kanchenjunga. In the north it adjoins the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve in Tibet, and in the east the Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim. To the west it borders the Sankhuwasabha District. It ranges in elevation from 1,200 to 8,586 m. It is part of the Sacred Himalayan Landscape, which is being developed by WWF Nepal in partnership with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.

Maiwakhola is a rural municipality located in the Taplejung District in the Province No. 1 of eastern Nepal. The total area of the municipality is 138 km2. The local body was formed on 10 March 2021 by merging three VDCs of Phakumba, Sanghu and Dhungesanghu. Currently, it has a total of 6 wards. The population of the rural municipality is 10,365 according to the preliminary report of 2021 Nepal census.

Pathibhara Yangwarak is a rural municipality (Gaunpalika) in Taplejung District of Province No. 1 of Nepal. Formerly the rural municipality was divided into many village development committees) located in Taplejung District in the Mechi Zone of EDR of Nepal. The local body came in existence when those VDCs: Nyangkholchyang, Thechambu, Tiringe, Dumrise, Chaksibot and Thumbedin merged after decision of MoFALD. Currently, it has a total of 6 wards. The population of the rural municipality is 13,591 according to the data collected on 2017 Nepalese local elections.
