Phidim Municipality is the headquarters of Panchthar District in the Koshi Province of eastern Nepal. Its old name is Pheden, which in Limbu langauage means land on top of hills. Phidim was the capital of Panthar Thum of Limbuwan and was upgraded from a village to a municipality when a development committee merged with other VDCs (village development committees) - including Phidim Chokmagu and Siwa villages - on May 18, 2014. [1] [2] It offers a route for trekkers and locals to and from the Taplejung district bordering the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. It is also a commercial hub for the rural surroundings.
Phidim is connected to the rest of the country via the Mechi Highway, a 268 kilometres (167 mi) road that begins in Charali of Jhapa district and ends in Phungling. Buses and jeeps to Phidim are available at Birtamod and Ilam. Though abundant public transport is available in the region, locals have frequently complained about the excessive rise in fares that rose after the Covid pandemic. A new Madhya Pahadi Rajmargha connects Phidim with the Athrai Rural Municipality of Terhathum, which is linked to Koshi Highway in Myanglung (the headquarters of Terhathum District). Madhya Pahadi Rajmargha, one of the roads linking east and west Nepal through hilly areas, starts from the Panchthar district and is connected to Phidim. The Koshi Corridor is under construction and will connects Phidim directly with Dharan which is also the shortest route to the terai region. Phidim has hotels and inns.
Phidim is a hill township within a valley in the foothills of the Himalayas of eastern Nepal. It is a six-hour drive from Birtamod through a winding road via Ilam. It offers views of the Himalaya and other hills. Phidim is characterized by tin-roofed houses and small concrete buildings. Two rivers — Phewa and Hewa — surround the hill where the town is located.
At the time of the 2001 Nepal census, Phidim had a population of 13,652. [3] The inhabitants are Limbu, Magar, Yakha, Gurung, Rai, Tamang, so-called Dalit, Brahmin and Newar, which makes it one of the most culturally diverse places in eastern Nepal.[ citation needed ]
The climate of Phidim is warm during the summer and mild in winter. Maximum temperature in the summer is 35 °C, and in winter 5 °C.
With its fertile soil and irrigation, Phidim produces rice, potato, cardamom and tea. Kanchenjunga Tea Estate, one of the major producers of Nepal tea, has a field office in Phidim.
Phidim has three community radio stations: Radio Sumatlung - 104.2 MHz, Eagle FM and Singhalila FM – 97.3 MHz, and two weekly newspapers, Public Post started in 2009 and Miklajung Awaj from February 2016.
Dhankuta is a hill town and the headquarters of Dhankuta District in Koshi Province in Eastern Nepal. According to 2011 Nepal census, it has population of 26,440 inhabitants.
Phungling Municipality is a municipality located in Taplejung District in the Koshi Province of Nepal. The municipality was formed merging the then two Village Development Committees of Phungling and Dokhu in May 2014. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census it had a population of 19,085 people and 4,480 individual households.
Dharan is a sub-metropolitan city in Sunsari District of Koshi Province, in eastern Nepal, which was established as a fourth municipality in the Kingdom in 1958. It is the third most populous city in eastern Nepal after Biratnagar and Itahari. The Nepali word "dharan" means a saw pit. The rainforest from which the tree trunks came is still just on the edge of the city. Much later the British Gurkha camp opened in October 1960. The use of the camp by British Gurkhas finished in the mid-1990s. Dharan has an estimated city population of 173,096 living in 34,834 households as per the 2021 Nepal census. It is one of the cities of the Greater Birat Development Area which incorporates the cities of Biratnagar-Itahari-Gothgau-Biratchowk-Dharan primarily located on the Koshi Highway in Eastern Nepal, with an estimated total urban agglomerated population of 804,300 people living in 159,332 households. It is the largest city in the Koshi Province by Area. It covers 192.32 square kilometers while Biratnagar and Itahari is 2nd and 3rd biggest cities by Area
Mechi was one of the fourteen zones of Nepal until the restructuring of zones to provinces, comprising four districts; namely Ilam, Jhapa, Panchthar and Taplejung. Its headquarters are at Ilam. It comes under the Eastern Development Region of Nepal. The Indian state of Bihar is to the south, West Bengal and Sikkim in the east and Tibet to the north. The largest town is Damak in the Terai. The majority of the population in Mechi are Limbu, Chettri, Bharmin, Maithil and Meche.

Damak is one of the oldest municipalities in Jhapa District of Koshi Province in eastern Nepal. It is situated between the Ratuwa River in the east and the Maawa River in the west. It has Sivalik Hills in its north and ends with the intersection of Ratuwa River and Maawa River in the south. Mahendra Highway, the longest highway of Nepal, bisects the municipality .It is the largest city in Jhapa District with a population of 107,410 in 2021.

Mechinagar is a municipality in Jhapa District, Koshi Province, Nepal and is the main entry point from India on Nepal's eastern border. Nepal's customs office is in Kakarvitta, a section of the municipality. The city lies 475 km southeast of the capital Kathmandu and 115 km east of Biratnagar, the capital of Province No. 1.
Myanglung is a municipality and the district headquarters of Terhathum District of Koshi Province in eastern Nepal. The "myang" means cat and "lung" means stone in Limbu language.The story is that the cat (myang) in ancient time, pawed the stone (lung) in anger. The municipality is situated at an elevation of about 1500 metres above sea level. Myanglung was converted into a municipality from a village development committee on 18 May 2014, merging the existing village development committees of Myanglung, Piple, Jirikhimti, Ambung, Sabla and Tamphula. According to the census of 2011 the total population of Myanglung is 19,659 including five VDCs.
Phakphok is a Village in Phakphokthum Rural Municipality of Ilam District in the Koshi Province of eastern Nepal. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 4,233 persons living in 734 individual households.
Bhadrapur, or Chandragadhi, is a town and municipality in Jhapa District in the Koshi Pradesh of southeastern Nepal. It lies on the banks of the Mechi River and shares borders with Bihar on the south and West Bengal on the north. There is a border crossing with a customs office for goods. Galgalia village in Kishanganj district borders Bhadrapur.
Chokmagu is a market center of Phidim Municipality in Panchthar District in the Province No. 1 in eastern Nepal. It was annexed to Phidim on 18 May 2014 to form the municipality. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 5698 people living in 835 individual households.
Siwa is a market center of Phidim Municipality in Panchthar District in the Mechi Zone in eastern Nepal. It was annexed to Phidim on 18 May 2014 to form the municipality. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 3970.
Laligurans is a municipality located in Terhathum District in the Koshi Province of eastern Nepal. After the government announcement, the municipality was established on 19 September 2015 by merging the existing Basantapur, Phulek, Dangpa, Sungnam and Solma village development committees (VDCs). The center of the municipality is established in Basantpur. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census after merging the five VDCs population it had a total population of 16,934 persons. After the government decision the number of municipalities has reached 217 in Nepal.
Koshi Province is the autonomous easternmost province adopted by the Constitution of Nepal on 20 September 2015. The province is rich in natural resources, tourist attractions, recreational activities, and natural beauty. The province covers an area of 25,905 km2 (10,002 sq mi), about 17.5% of the country's total area. With the industrial city of Biratnagar as its capital, the province includes major eastern towns of Birtamod, Sundar Haraincha, Damak, Dharan, Itahari, Triyuga Municipality and Mechinagar, and the Mount Everest, Kangchenjunga and Ama Dablam. Koshi River, the largest river of the nation, forms the province's western boundary. Under the First-past-the-post voting system issued by the Constituency Delimitation Commission, Nepal, the province hosts 28 parliamentary seats and 56 provincial assembly seats.
Former administrative units of Nepal are administrative divisions during Kingdom of Nepal. In 2008 Nepal was proclaimed a federal republic and old administrative units restricted after adoption of new constitution on 20 September 2015.
