Officially the Physics and Mathematics Specialized School named after Artashes Shahinyan under the Yerevan State University , colloquially known as PhysMath School, is a state-owned high school located in Yerevan, Armenia. [1] It is currently among the leading educational complexes in Yerevan. The school has a branch in Stepanakert; the capital of the unrecognized state of Artsakh.

Overview

The PhysMath School was founded in 1965 in affiliation with the Yerevan State University and through the efforts of professor Artashes Shahinyan. Following the death of Shahinyan in 1978, the school was named after him.

The school is known for its role in preparing physics and mathematics teachers. It was ranked 1st in Armenia for the 2013-14 educational year.

The current headmaster of the school is Armen Sargsyan, serving since 2002.

Artem Alikhanian was a Soviet and Armenian physicist, one of the founders and first director of the Yerevan Physics Institute, a correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union (1946), academic of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences. Mkhitar Djrbashian was a notable Armenian mathematician, who made significant contributions to the constructive theory of functions, harmonic analysis, theory of analytic functions and a fundamental contribution to the classical theory of univalent analytic functions. He was born in Yerevan in a family of refugees from the town Van of Western Armenia escaping from the Armenian genocide of 1915 in Turkey. Mkhitar Djrbashian created some well-known mathematical theories and did everything possible for the development of Armenian Mathematical School to the high international standards in many branches of mathematics.

Ashot Vezirovich Petrosian was a Soviet Armenian mathematician. He completed his PhD in Computational Mathematics in 1964 under the supervision of Julius Anatolyevich Schrader. He was a founding member of the Mergelyan Institute of Mathematical Machines and the Computing Center of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences. He also contributed to the development of several generations of advanced digital computer systems in Armenia, including the Nairi (computer) and ES EVM.

Ayb Educational Foundation was founded in 2006 in Armenia. The objective of the foundation is to "shape a culture of excellence in learning" and support the development of Armenian education.

Garnik A. Karapetyan (Armenian: Գառնիկ Ալբերտի Կարապետյան, 3 February 1958 – 29 November 2018, Armenia) was an Armenian scientist and mathematician. His main research was in the fields of mathematical analysis, differential equations and mathematical physics. At the time of his death he was a professor of mathematics at Russian-Armenian University in Yerevan, Armenia, and chaired the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling.

Artashes Shahinian was an Armenian mathematician, Doctor of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics (1944), Professor (1944), and member of the Armenian Academy of Sciences (1947,. Deserved scientist of ArmSSR. He worked in complex analysis, and besides research papers, he also authored texts and research monographs in mathematics. Being a talented mentor and professor, Shahinian was a teacher and research supervisor for many young gifted mathematicians. He is the founder of the Armenian research mathematical school, which already in the 1940s and early 1950s was known internationally. Academician Shahinian was also known by his speeches and publications on many questions of public importance in Armenia. Some known Armenian poets, writers, and painters of the time have witnessed that Shahinyan had professional level knowledge in poetry, history, and arts. It is well known that he also shared that knowledge with his students. Among the first students of Academician Shahinian were Sergey Mergelyan, Mkhitar Djrbashian, Rafayel Alexandryan, Alexander Talalyan, and Norair Arakelian, who became famous mathematicians, academicians, and the next leaders of the Armenian mathematical school.
