Point Douglas, Minnesota

Point Douglas is a ghost town in section 8 of Denmark Township, Washington County, Minnesota, United States [1] located at the convergence of the St. Croix River and the Mississippi River. It is located across the St Croix River from Prescott, Wisconsin. [1]

Point Douglas was platted on August 18, 1849, and named in honor of Stephen A. Douglas. The post office, with Levi Hurtsell as first postmaster, was the first in the County, and was transferred from Wisconsin Territory when Minnesota Territory was created. [1] It was discontinued in 1903. [2] In 1856, the site was a trade center and had a mill, several warehouses, and a lime kiln. The town also had a station of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. [1] Today, all that remains of Point Douglas is a small development along U.S. Route 10 [3]

La Pointe County was created on February 19, 1845, by the Territory of Wisconsin from the northern portion of the existing territorial St. Croix County, encompassing the remaining portions of the Northwest Territory in Wisconsin Territory north of the line drawn from the confluence of the Ripple River with the Mississippi River to the western edge of Lac Courte Oreilles, to the eastern edge of Lac Courte Oreilles, and to the western branch of the Montreal River. The county was named for the community of La Pointe, Wisconsin on Madeline Island, which was its county seat from 1858 until 1866.

Point Douglas to Superior Military Road, also known as Point Douglas to St. Louis River Military Road was a road that ran between Point Douglas, located at the outlet of the Lower St. Croix Lake near Hastings, Minnesota, first to the falls of the St. Louis River near Thomson, Minnesota, and later extended to the mouth of the St. Louis River in Superior, Wisconsin. From Douglas Point immediately east of Hastings, Minnesota, the route connected Stillwater, Taylors Falls, Sunrise, Chengwatana, Fortuna, Scotts Corner, to Thomson and Superior. Several discontinuous sections of this road are still in use.
