Portrait of a Man is an oil an oak panel painting by Dutch artist Frans Hals, created in 1634. It is held at the Timken Museum of Art, in San Diego. It depicts an unidentified man of the upper classes, like it can be deduced by his clothing, with his right hand on his chest, and helding his thumb high. [1]

Her entire oeuvre came to be attributed to Frans Hals or to her husband, Jan Miense Molenaer. In 1893, she was rediscovered and scholars began to attribute her works properly.
Hendrik Gerritsz Pot was a Dutch Golden Age painter, who lived and painted in Haarlem, where he was an officer of the militia, or schutterij. Dutch artist Frans Hals painted Pot in militia sash in Hals' The Officers of the St Adrian Militia Company in 1633. Pot is the man reading a book on the far right.

The subject of the painting is unknown but believed to be a physician, partially owing to the painting previously having been called Portrait of a Doctor. The portrait demonstrates Hals' "rapid spontaneous manner of painting". It was acquired in 1764 by the Hermitage Museum in Russia. It was previously owned by Frederick the Great, who sent it to Catherine the Great as part of a batch of paintings in lieu of paying off several debts to Russia.
