Prabhat Raju Koli (born 27 July 1999) is an Indian open water swimmer based in Mumbai. In 2018, Koli was awarded with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, [1] which was presented by Ramnath Kovind, the President of India. [2] [3] He was also awarded with Shiv Chhatrapati Award [4] by the Maharashtra government.

Swimming

In 2016, Koli participated in the 81 kilometres (50 mi) India National Open Water Swimming Competition in West Bengal. He has swum 66 kilometres (41 mi) around the Isle of Jersey; 34 kilometres (21 mi) across the English Channel; 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) in the Cape Town, South Africa, Langban Swim; 7.4 kilometres (4.6 mi) from Robben Islandin to Blouberg, South Africa; 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Landudno to Campus Bay, South Africa; 32.3 kilometres (20.1 mi) across the Catalina Channel in California; 42 kilometres (26 mi) across the Molokai Channel in Hawaii. He participated in the 45.9 kilometres (28.5 mi), 20 Bridges Swim in New York; swam 15.2 kilometres (9.4 mi) across the Bodenseequerung  [ de ], from Lindau, Germany, to Rorschach, Switzerland; 19.5 kilometres (12.1 mi) across the Tsugaru Strait in Japan; 35 kilometres (22 mi) across the North Channel; and 14.4 kilometres (8.9 mi) across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain to Morocco. Mihir Sen was a famous Indian long distance swimmer and lawyer. He was the first Asian to conquer the English Channel from Dover to Calais in 1958, and did so in the fourth fastest time. He was the only man to swim the oceans of the five continents in one calendar year (1966). These included the Palk Strait, Dardanelles, Bosphorus, Gibraltar, and the entire length of the Panama Canal. This unique achievement earned him a place in The Guinness Book of Records as the "world's greatest long distance swimmer".

The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri in 1990.

Satendra Singh Lohiya is an Indian swimmer with 70% disability. On 24 June 2018 he crossed the English Channel as part of a swimming relay team which, for the first time saw four para swimmers from India cross the English Channel. He completed the channel in 12 hours and 26 minutes, setting a new record. He has been selected for the Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award 2019 for first Indian para swimmer which was given by the Honorable President of India Ram Nath Kovind and The Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi also recognized and appreciated Satendra Singh Lohiya's hard work and blessed him for his future endeavor. He received Vikram Award, the highest state-level sports awards in Madhya Pradesh, for swimming from the Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chauhan, MP on 23 December 2014.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Millie Hudson</span> British diver, swimmer, sports journalist

Millie Hudson was a British diver, open water swimmer, diving coach, and sports journalist. She competed in the women's 3 metre springboard event at the 1924 Summer Olympics. In 1927, she attempted to swim across the English Channel, but had to abandon her attempt after 13 hours in the water. In 1928, she attempted to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, but failed after 8.5 hours due to rough waters. After retiring from long-distance swimming, she continued to coach, and trained British Olympic springboard diver Esme Harris. Hudson was the swimming correspondent for the Evening Standard in London, and became the first woman to be admitted to the Sports Writers' Association in 1949.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award</span> Indian adventure sports award

The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, formerly known as the National Adventure Awards is the highest adventure sports honour of the Republic of India. The award is named after Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two individuals to reach the summit of Mount Everest along with Edmund Hillary in 1953. It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The recipients are honoured for their "outstanding achievement in the field of adventure activities on land, sea and air" over the last three years. The lifetime achievement is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated excellence and have devoted themselves in the promotion of adventure sports. As of 2020, the award comprises "a bronze statuette of Tenzing Norgay along with a cash prize of 15 lakh (US$19,000)."

Shyamala Goli also referred to as Goli Shyamala is an Indian endurance swimmer, Producer, Creative Director and Writer to the Animation Series and Movies. In March 2021, she became the second Indian woman and second woman in the world after Bhula Chaudhary to have crossed the Palk Strait. She completed the feat at the age of 47.
