Pravin Ramesh Jadhav (born 6 July 1996) is an Indian archer from Maharashtra, supported by OGQ. He competes in the recurve discipline. At the 2019 World Archery Championships, he was a member of the first Indian team to qualify for the final since 2005; the team received the silver medal. He will representing India again at the 2024 Summer Olympics at Paris. He made his Olympic debut at Tokyo.

Early life

Jadhav was born on 6 July 1996 into a family of daily wage labourers. His family lived in a shack near a drain [2] in the drought-prone village of Sarade in Satara district. Jadhav would sometimes accompany his father to work in the farm, during his teenage years. [3]

Interested in sports from his childhood, Jadhav participated in 800 meters at district level, but did not have enough stamina as a result of being undernourished. [4] His school teacher Vikas Bhujbal then bore the expenses for his training and diet, resulting in better performances and selection in the Krida Parbodhini school. After receiving training for one year in Balewadi, Pune, where his 800 meters timing improved, he shifted to Amravati, where he was trained in archery. Jadhav, still physically weak, experienced difficulty in handling the weight of the recurve bow, with the academy mulling to release him due to his sub-par performances. Bhujbal then requested help from Mahesh Palkar, an education officer, who asked the academy to give Jadhav a final chance. Having been given five shots to prove himself, Jadhav scored over 45 and retained his place in the academy. [4] He is supported by sports NGO Olympic Gold Quest.

Career

Jadhav first represented India at the 2016 Asia Cup Stage 1 in Bangkok, where he won bronze medal in the men's recurve team event. [5] [4] Later that year, he was part of Indian B team in the 2016 Archery World Cup stage in Medellín. [6]

At the 2019 World Archery Championships, Jadhav was a member of the Indian team which became the first men's recurve team from the country to qualify for the final since 2005. The team of Jadhav, Atanu Das and Tarundeep Rai beat sixth-seeded Canada to qualify for the knockout stage and secure India a place at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Then they beat third-seeded Chinese Taipei and hosts Netherlands in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively. [7] The team settled for silver after losing to China in the final. [8]

Personal life

Jadhav was recruited in the Indian Army under sports quota in 2017, after being spotted by Colonel Vikram Dhayal, coach of the compound team, during the 2016 World Cup. As of 2019, he is ranked havaldar. [8] [9]

Deepika Kumari is an Indian professional archer, supported by OGQ. She won a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth games in the women's individual recurve event. She also won a gold medal in the same competition in the women's team recurve event along with Dola Banerjee and Bombayala Devi. She has won individual gold in two of the three stages of the World Cup—one in Guatemala and another in Paris. In the process she also reclaimed the number one ranking after nine years in Paris World Cup. Deepika Kumari won individual gold medals at the Archery World Cup Stage 1. Deepika Kumari also defeated Mexico by 5–1 in the final to win gold in Paris.

The national Indian governing body of archery as a sport in India is the Archery Association of India.

Amy Oliver is an archer from Great Britain. A competitor at the 2012 Summer Olympics, she won a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, a bronze medal at the 2011 World Archery Championships, and was the women's individual recurve champion at the World Field Archery Championships in 2016. Oliver announced her retirement from the British national archery team in 2017.

Jung Dasomi is an archer from South Korea who specialises in recurve archery. Jung made a highly successful debut in international archery in 2011, winning medals at the World Archery Championships, Archery World Cup and Summer Universiade, and concluding the year as the number one-ranked female recurve archer in the World Archery Rankings. She won two further medals in 2014 at the Asian Games before a downturn in form relegated her from the national team. Jung did not return to international archery competitions until 2018.

Patrick Huston is a British two-time Olympian archer from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He captured three world championship titles under the youth level, and eventually competed as a member of the two person archery squad of Team GB at the 2016 Summer Olympics, in Rio, losing the first round match to the eventual champion Ku Bon-chan of South Korea. In the Tokyo 2020 Olympics his best result was a men's team 5th. Huston currently lives near Lilleshall National Sporting Centre and trained full-time under senior national coach Richard Priestman for Archery UK, while remaining a loyal founding member of East Belfast Archery Club. Mete Gazoz is a Turkish recurve archer. He won the gold medal in the men's individual event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. He also represented Turkey at the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the 2023 World Archery Championships held in Berlin, Mete Gazoz emerged victorious, claiming the prestigious Individual title. In an intense final, he triumphed over the skilled Canadian archer Eric Peters, securing his place as the first Turkish archer to achieve the esteemed recurve gold medal in a World Championship.

Atanu Das is an Indian archer. He represents India in the recurve men's individual and team events. His current world ranking is 9 as of 22 July 2021. He is the spouse of former World No. 1 Indian archer Deepika Kumari. The Indian Men's recurve team consisting of Atanu Das, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tushar Shelke won the silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games. They lost the final to Republic of Korea.

Gabriela Schloesser is a Mexican-born Dutch recurve archer from Tijuana who represented Mexico before 2016, and has represented the Netherlands since 2017. In 2021, Schloesser and Steve Wijler won the silver medal in the mixed team event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Ankita Bhakat is an Indian recurve archer, supported by OGQ, who is currently ranked world number 20 by the World Archery Federation. She is a member of the Indian national recurve team and competes in international events in the women's individual, women's team and the mixed team recurve categories. She competed in the 2017 World Archery Youth Championships held at Rosario, Argentina, and won the gold medal in the recurve junior mixed team event with partner Jemson Singh Ningthoujam.

Ojas Pravin Deotale is an Indian archer currently ranked 9th in the world. On 5 August 2023, he won the gold medal in the men's individual compound event at 2023 World Archery Championships in Berlin, becoming the first Indian male archer to do so. He also medalled at the 2022 Asia Cup and the 2023 Archery World Cup.

BommadevaraDhiraj is an Indian archer from Andhra Pradesh, supported by OGQ. He represents India in the recurve men's individual and team events. In the recurve men, he is ranked 15th in the World Rankings. He booked a berth for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. In the buildup to the Olympics in June 2024, he won a bronze medal at the World Cup 2024 in Antalya.

Tushar Prabhakar Shelke is an Indian archer. He represents India in the recurve men's individual and team events. He is selected for the Indian Archery team to take part in the 2022 Asian Games at Hangzhou, China. The Indian Men's recurve team consisting of Atanu Das, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tushar Shelke won the silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games.
