Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame

The Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame recognises a set of the leaders in business and social development in Queensland, Australia. Inclusion in the hall of fame can be of individual people (living or dead), groups of people, and organisations, which operate either for profit and not for profit. [1]

Contents

History

In 2009, the State Library of Queensland, the Queensland Library Foundation and Queensland University of Technology collaborated to establish the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame (QBLHOF) which recognises the "outstanding public contribution made by leaders of business to the reputation of Queensland and its economic and social development". [1]

The new inductees are announced at an annual Induction Dinner gala event each year.

Criteria

The following criteria have been established for the IC to assess the eligibility of those who will be proposed as inductees of the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame. Nominees may be drawn from the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors: [2]

Fellowship

Since 2014 the QBLHOF has also awarded an annual Fellowship, to recipients working on a research project that utilises the resources of the John Oxley Library at State Library of Queensland to produce new interpretations of Queensland's business history.

Sir Manuel Richard Hornibrook OBE was an Australian builder and civil engineer. He founded the firm M R Hornibrook Pty Ltd that after merger with Baulderstone became one of the largest Australian civil engineering firms. Known as "MR", Hornibrook was knighted in 1960. He was highly respected and a builder of bridges across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Papua New Guinea as well as other major projects including Stages 2 and 3 of the Sydney Opera House.

Sir Joseph Aloysius Sheehy KBE was an Australian jurist and Senior Puisne Judge of the Queensland Supreme Court. He also served as Administrator of the Government of Queensland in 1965 and 1969, and as Queensland's Lieutenant-Governor, Deputy Governor, Acting Governor and Acting Chief Justice on several occasions.

Dimity Dornan AO is a speech pathologist, author, social entrepreneur, bionics advocate, researcher, and businesswoman in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She is the founder of the Hear and Say Centre for Deaf Children on 6 July 1992 and helped initiate newborn hearing screening in Queensland hospitals, the first such program in Australia. She has received Australian of the Year for Queensland in 2003, and the Suncorp Queenslander of the Year in 2010. Griffith University offers a Dimity Dornan Hear and Say Master of Speech Pathology Scholarship for second year students who have an interest in paediatric speech pathology and working in a regional area.

George ChapmanAO is a surveyor, and businessman from Cairns, Queensland, Australia. He has contributed to the community of Queensland as Chairman of Telecasters North Queensland, Ten Network Holdings, TAB Queensland, Cairns Port Authority, Chapman Group and Skyrail Pty Ltd. Other significant contributions include his involvement in the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, Cairns Regional Development Bureau, and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

Philip John Bacon is an Australian art dealer, philanthropist and mentor to young artists. In 2019, he was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in recognition of his status as Australia's leading art dealer and his outstanding contributions to philanthropy.

Sir George Read FisherHonFAusIMM was one of Australia's leading mining executives. In 2019, he was posthumously inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in recognition of his eminent business leadership, driving the long-term success of Mount Isa Mines and Mount Isa's growth and development as a city.
