Raj Rewal (born 24 November 1934) [1] [2] is an Indian architect. [3]

Education

Rewal lived in Delhi and Shimla from 1934 to 1951. He attended Harcourt Butler higher secondary school. From 1951 and 1954, he attended the Delhi School of Architecture in New Delhi. After completing a degree in architecture in New Delhi, he moved to London in 1955 where he lived until 1961. He attended the Architectural Association School of Architecture for one year and the Brixton School of Building, London from 1956 to 1960. [4] GD Goenka University also honour architect Raj Rewal with an honorary doctorate at a special convocation organised by University in India Habitat Centre.

Career

Raj Rewal worked at Michel Ecochard's office in Paris before starting his practice in New Delhi in 1962. Between 1963 and 1972, he taught at the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi. [4] He opened a second office at Tehran, Iran in 1974. Among his better known projects are the Hall of Nations (Hall 6) at the Pragati Maidan Exhibition Centre, [5] demolished in April 2017, [6] Asiad Village Complex, National Institute of Immunology (NII), New Delhi; the Parliament Library in New Delhi and NCBS (National Centre for Biological Sciences) campus at Bangalore. [7] [8] In 1986, he became the curator of the exhibition "Traditional Architecture in India" for the Government of India organised festival of India in Paris. He also designed an architectural college (SIUPA) in Rohtak and is head of members in academic council. In 2018 his drawings and models were added to the New York Museum of Modern Art permanent collection, making him the first Indian architect represented. [2]

Appu Ghar was an amusement park operated by International Amusement Limited, located in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India. It was spread over 15.5 acres (63,000 m2) and was India's first amusement park. It was established in 1984 to commemorate the 1982 Asian Games, and was inaugurated on 19 November 1984 by then-Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. The park closed down in 2008 after a legal ruling allocating the land for government use.

Bharat Mandapam is an exhibition hall located within the confines of the sprawling Pragati Maidan complex in New Delhi, India. It is one of the largest convention centres of India, whose design and architecture draws inspiration from the twelfth-century Anubhava Mantapa. Bharat Mandapam was unveiled in 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was constructed on the site of Hall of Nations, which was controversially razed in 2017. With a total built-up area of 390,000 sq. metres, the complex includes a meeting hall that can accommodate 7,000 people in a single format, along with six exhibition halls spanning an exhibition area of 150,000 sq. metres. The 2023 G20 New Delhi summit occurred at this venue between 9-10 September 2023.

Joseph Stein was an American architect and a major figure in the establishment of a regional modern architecture in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1940s and 1950s during the early days of the environmental design movement. In 1952, he moved to India and in 1955 was tasked with the planning of Durgapur in West Bengal, India along with Benjamin Polk. He was commissioned with this task in order to facilitate the establishment of Durgapur Steel Plant later on in 1959 followed by the Durgapur Steel City and Township. He is noted for designing several important buildings in India, most notably in Lodhi Estate in Central Delhi, nicknamed "Steinabad" after him, and where today the 'Joseph Stein Lane', is the only road in Delhi named after an architect. He is also famous for being the architect of the scenic Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode's campus. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri in 1992. His works remain even more relevant in the modern context as need for sustainable and humane architecture is felt.

Aishwarya Tipnis is an Indian architect, educator and heritage conservationist, whose eponymous practice Aishwarya Tipnis Architects focuses on heritage conservation of neglected monuments and significant buildings of India. In 2015, her work on the century-old Main Building of The Doon School received the Honourable Mention under the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. In 2016, the firm's restoration work on the walls and bastions of the 18th-century Mahidpur Fort, in Madhya Pradesh, was given the Award of Merit under the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards. In 2018, she became the youngest architect to be appointed the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government for her preservation work of French heritage in India, particularly Chandernagore in West Bengal. Tipnis was part of the UNESCO Expert Team for preparing the Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. She has been recognised as a Global Cultural Leader by the European Union in 2016.

State Trading Corporation building in New Delhi, India, was designed by the architect Raj Rewal, and is home to the government-owned State Trading Corporation of India. Built between 1976 and 1989, it is considered to be an important example of modernist architecture in post-Independence India. Rewal used elements from the Japanese Metabolism style, but departed from it by drawing inspiration from Mughal architecture, as seen in the polychromatic sandstone cladding, instead of concrete. The "structurally expressive" design employs Vierendeel trusses. Apart from offices, the building houses the Central Cottage Industries Emporium, a government-run store that retails Indian crafts products.

Mahendra Raj was an Indian structural engineer and designer who contributed to structural design of many buildings in India including the Hall of Nations at the Pragati Maidan in Delhi and the Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad. Raj's work is considered pioneering for its engineering solutions for exposed concrete buildings and much of his work is seen as telling the history of post-independence India. In a career spanning six decades, he collaborated with architects including Le Corbusier, B. V. Doshi, Charles Correa, and Raj Rewal, and contributed to the structural design for more than 250 projects.

Kuldip Singh was an Indian architect and urban planner known for his brutalist architecture designs.
