Ranolus is a genus of beetles in the family Dermestidae from Southeast Asia and Oceania. [1] It was originally described as a subgenus of Attagenus , containing only the species Ranolus cavernicola. It was later found to be a separate genus, and was placed in its own tribe, Ranolini, along with Orphilodes . A second species, Ranolus tenebricola, was described by Jiří Háva in 2014. [2] Orphilodes was later synonymized with Ranolus. [3]
Ranolus contains the following seven species: [1]
Spercheus is a genus of aquatic beetles which are placed in a family of their own, Spercheidae within the Hydrophiloidea. About 20 species are known from around the world except the Nearctic with the majority being from the Oriental and Afrotropical Realms.
Dermestidae are a family of Coleoptera that are commonly referred to as skin beetles. Other common names include larder beetle, hide or leather beetles, carpet beetles, and khapra beetles. There are over 1,800 species described.
Myxophaga is the second-smallest suborder of the Coleoptera after Archostemata, consisting of roughly 65 species of small to minute beetles in four families. The members of this suborder are aquatic and semiaquatic, and feed on algae.
Derodontidae is a family of beetles, in its own superfamily, Derodontoidea, sometimes known as the tooth-necked fungus beetles. Beetles of this family are small, between 2 and 6 mm in length, typically with spiny margins on their pronotum that give them their name, though the genus Laricobius lacks these spines. Unusual among beetles, they have two ocelli on the top of their heads.
Dermestinae is a subfamily of beetles in the family Dermestidae. It contains the following genera:
Ctesias is a genus of beetles in the family Dermestidae, the skin beetles. They are distributed in the Palearctic, including Europe. There are about 23 species.
Globicornis is a genus of beetles in the family Dermestidae, the skin beetles. They are distributed throughout the world.
Trinodinae is a subfamily of beetles in the family Dermestidae, containing the following genera:
Jacobsoniidae are a family of tiny beetles belonging to Staphylinoidea. The larvae and adults live under bark, in plant litter, fungi, bat guano and rotten wood. There are around 28 described species in three genera:
Nosodendridae is a family of beetles, with only 67 species in three extant genera, which are found worldwide. Nosodendron, the largest genus, is found in forests and attracted to yeast generated slime on the wounds of trees, and likely consumes fermented substances as well as fungi and microorganisms. Several additional genera and species are known from the fossil record. Nosodendridae is considered to be an isolated lineage within Polyphaga, being the sister group to the clade containing Staphyliniformia, Bostrichoidea and Cucujiformia.
Cavognathidae is a family of beetles, in the superfamily Cucujoidea. It contains a single genus, Taphropiestes with around a dozen species known from South America, Australia and New Zealand. In Australian and New Zealand species adults and larvae have been found living in bird nests, but their ecology is unclear, but they are possibly scavengers.
Orphinus is a genus of beetles in the family Dermestidae, the skin beetles. The genus is distributed in Africa, Asia, and the Australian region, especially in tropical areas; at least one species is cosmopolitan. There are about 88 species.
Derodontus is a genus of tooth-necked fungus beetles in the family Derodontidae. There are about eleven described species in Derodontus.
Orphinus fulvipes is a species of carpet beetle in the family Dermestidae. It is found in North America, South Asia, Oceania, and Europe.
Dearthrus is a genus of carpet beetles in the family Dermestidae. There are at least two described species in Dearthrus.
Myrabolia is the only genus in the beetle family Myraboliidae in the superfamily Cucujoidea. It has about 13 species, found in Australia. Adults and possibly larvae live under the bark of Eucalyptus trees.
2017 in paleoentomology is a list of new fossil insect taxa that were described during the year 2017, as well as other significant discoveries and events related to paleoentomology that were scheduled to occur during the year.
Anthrenus ceylonicus, is a species of skin beetle found in Sri Lanka.
Anthrenus (Anthrenus) oceanicus, is a species of skin beetle native to Hawaii, India, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, New Caledonia and Mauritius. It is introduced to Egypt, French Polynesia, Czech Republic and England particularly with commodities.
Orphinus (Orphinus) tabitha, is a species of skin beetle found in South India and Sri Lanka.
