Rest of India cricket team is a first-class cricket team in India that is composed of players from across the country except for those from the current Ranji Trophy winners. [1] [2] It competes annually against the Ranji Trophy winner for the Irani Cup, in a "The Best vs Best of the Rest" tournament. The team was officially instituted for the 1959–60 Irani Cup, playing its first match on 18 March 1960 against the Bombay.

Rest of India has won Irani Cup 30 times (outright wins and first innings leads in drawn matches) and shared the trophy twice (with Bombay in 1965–66 and Delhi in 1979–80).

Other forms

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has named other Rest of India teams. These have played tour matches against international teams, and in 1971-1972 played a series of 3 first-class matches against the Indian national cricket team to raise funds for defence forces. [4] A List A "Best vs Best of the Rest" match was organized between Rest of India and the winner of 1989-90 Deodhar Trophy, West Zone, on 2 October 1989. [5]

The Irani Cup, also known as the IDFC First Bank Irani Trophy for sponsorship reasons, is an annual one-off First-Class cricket match organised by the BCCI and contested each season by the reigning Ranji Trophy champions and a multi-state RoI team composed of players from the other state teams. The inaugural edition was played in March 1960 as a special event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ranji Trophy. It was intended to be a one-off match but, in 1962, BCCI decided to institute it as annual fixture and it has been played in most seasons since 1962–63. BCCI named the Irani Trophy after Zal R. Irani, their long-serving president and treasurer, who was a significant figure in the organisation from its inception in 1928, till his death in 1970.

In India, the Bengal cricket team represents the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) in domestic competition. Based at the historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, they have played first-class cricket since 1935. Bengal have won the Ranji Trophy twice and been runners-up 13 times. They also play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy, both of which they have won once. Several international cricketers have played for the team including Dilip Doshi, Sourav Ganguly, Deep Dasgupta, Mohammed Shami, Pankaj Roy, and Wriddhiman Saha.

The 1959–60 Irani Cup was the inaugural edition of the Irani Cup, an annual first-class cricket fixture in India which matches the previous season's Ranji Trophy winners against a multi-state team called the Rest of India (ROI). The concept was devised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ranji Trophy. The trophy was named after Zal R. Irani, the BCCI President.

The 1979–80 Irani Cup match was scheduled to be played between 1–5 February 1980 at the Gandhi Stadium in Jalandhar between Rest of India and the reigning Ranji Trophy champions Delhi. No play was possible due to rain and the match was abandoned without a toss. This was only the second time that the Irani Cup was shared between two teams, after the 1965–66 Irani Cup.

The 1971–72 Irani Cup match was played from 21 to 24 October 1971 at the Brabourne Stadium in Bombay. Rest of India defeated the reigning Ranji Trophy champions Bombay defeated by 111 runs.
