The Mumbai cricket team, formerly known as the Bombay Cricket Team, is a cricket team which represents Mumbai in Indian domestic cricket. It is governed by Mumbai Cricket Association. Its home ground is Wankhede Stadium in Churchgate.
The Tamil Nadu cricket team is a domestic cricket team run by Tamil Nadu Cricket Association representing the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It has been one of the most dominant teams in white-ball domestic Indian cricket. The team plays in Ranji Trophy, the highest tier of the domestic first-class cricket tournament in India and in List A tournaments Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. They have won the Ranji Trophy twice and have finished runners-up nine times. They are the team that has won the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy most often. They were the first team to win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2006/07. The team was known as Madras until the 1970–71 season before the Madras state was renamed Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is the only team to win the five different Indian domestic trophies.
The Irani Cup, also known as the IDFC First Bank Irani Trophy for sponsorship reasons, is an annual one-off First-Class cricket match organised by the BCCI and contested each season by the reigning Ranji Trophy champions and a multi-state RoI team composed of players from the other state teams. The inaugural edition was played in March 1960 as a special event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ranji Trophy. It was intended to be a one-off match but, in 1962, BCCI decided to institute it as annual fixture and it has been played in most seasons since 1962–63. BCCI named the Irani Trophy after Zal R. Irani, their long-serving president and treasurer, who was a significant figure in the organisation from its inception in 1928, till his death in 1970.

It is part of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group and has seen scattered success over its many years in the Ranji Trophy circuit. It was played as a one-off match between the Vidarbha and Rest of India cricket team, from 12 February 2019 to 16 February 2019. In April 2018, ESPNcricinfo had reported that Irani Cup was proposed to be no more part of the domestic season but it was included in the final schedule released by BCCI in July. Vidarbha successfully defended their title and defeated Rest of India on first-innings basis to win the tournament. Vidarbha became the third team after Bombay and Karnataka to defend both the Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup. Hanuma Vihari became the first player to score 3 consecutive centuries in Irani Cup.

The 1959–60 Irani Cup was the inaugural edition of the Irani Cup, an annual first-class cricket fixture in India which matches the previous season's Ranji Trophy winners against a multi-state team called the Rest of India (ROI). The concept was devised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ranji Trophy. The trophy was named after Zal R. Irani, the BCCI President.
The 1979–80 Irani Cup match was scheduled to be played between 1–5 February 1980 at the Gandhi Stadium in Jalandhar between Rest of India and the reigning Ranji Trophy champions Delhi. No play was possible due to rain and the match was abandoned without a toss. This was only the second time that the Irani Cup was shared between two teams, after the 1965–66 Irani Cup.
The 1971–72 Irani Cup match was played from 21 to 24 October 1971 at the Brabourne Stadium in Bombay. Rest of India defeated the reigning Ranji Trophy champions Bombay defeated by 111 runs.
