Richard Thomas Brophy Jr. [2] is a United States Navy rear admiral and naval aviator who serves as Chief of Naval Air Training since July 19, 2022. [3] He most recently served as commander of Carrier Strike Group 4 from May 17, 2021, to July 8, 2022. [4] He previously served as commander of the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center from May 2019 to May 2021, with commands of Carrier Air Wing 9 from January 2015 to June 2016 and Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 115 from 2007 to 2009. A native of Carmel, California, Brophy was commissioned via the United States Naval Academy in 1991. He earned an M.S. degree in management from Troy State University and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1994. He graduated from the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), and later in 2010 earned an M.A. degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College. [10]

In February 2023, he was nominated for promotion to rear admiral. [11] [12]

The United States Fleet Forces Command (USFF) is a service component command of the United States Navy that provides naval forces to a wide variety of U.S. forces. A carrier strike group (CSG) is a type of carrier battle group of the United States Navy. It is an operational formation composed of roughly 7,500 personnel, usually an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers or frigates, and a carrier air wing of 65 to 70 aircraft. A carrier strike group also, on occasion, includes submarines, attached logistics ships and a supply ship. The carrier strike group commander operationally reports to the commander of the numbered fleet, who is operationally responsible for the area of waters in which the carrier strike group is operating.

The Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic is the aviation Type Commander (TYCOM) for the United States Naval aviation units operating primarily in the Atlantic under United States Fleet Forces Command. Type Commanders are in administrative control (ADCON), and in some cases operational control (OPCON) of certain types of assets assigned to the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets. Carrier Strike Group 5, also known as CSG 5 or CARSTRKGRU 5, is the U.S. Navy carrier strike group assigned to the United States Pacific Fleet and permanently forward deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet. The Strike Group Flagship is the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) which also embarks Strike Warfare Commander, Carrier Air Wing Five and its nine squadrons. He previously served as the Commander of Carrier Strike Group 4. Raised in Downers Grove, Illinois, Cheever earned a Bachelor of Business degree from Western Illinois University in 1986. He joined the navy in 1988 and, after flight training, was designated a naval aviator in 1990.
