Ringwood Basketball Association (RBA) was founded in 1990, with a men's team debuting in the Country Victorian Invitation Basketball League (CVIBL) in 1990 followed by a women's team in 1991. [1] In 1999, the men's team won the VBL Division One championship. [1] In 2012, the men's team won their first Big V championship. This was followed by titles in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. [1] The women's team also won a Big V championship in 2015. [1]
In 2019, the Hawks joined the NBL1 for its inaugural season. [2] [3] The NBL1 South season did not go ahead in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [4] In the 2022 NBL1 season, the Hawks women won the NBL1 South championship [5] and reached the grand final of the NBL1 National Finals. [1]

Each conference is run by their respective state governing body, with the league including 74 clubs from across every state and territory.
The 2019 NBL1 season was the inaugural season of the NBL1. The season began on 29 March and concluded on 17 August with grand final day for both the men's and women's seasons.

In 2019, Basketball Victoria partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to create NBL1. NBL1 South was the lone conference in 2019, with North, Central, West and East joining over the proceeding three years. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NBL1 South did not have a season in 2020 and only half a season in 2021.
The 2022 NBL1 season was the third season of the NBL1. With the West Conference introduced in 2021 alongside the South, North and Central conferences, the NBL1 expanded further in 2022 with the inclusion of an East Conference.
