Robert Frank Johnson OAM (born 17 October 1943) is a former Australian politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1993 to 2017. He was elected as a member of the Liberal Party,and served as a minister in the government of Colin Barnett from 2008 to 2012,but resigned from the party in 2016 to sit as an independent. He was defeated at the 2017 election.
Johnson was born in London,England. At the age of 35,he was elected as a councillor for the London Borough of Sutton and subsequently became Mayor. [1]
Soon after emigrating to Australia in 1988,he was elected as a councillor to the City of Wanneroo in 1991. The following year he was elected Mayor. [1]
Johnson was elected as the member for Whitford in 1993 and,following a re-distribution of boundaries,was re-elected for the seat of Hillarys in 1996. [2]
From December 1999 until February 2001,Johnson served in the Court Coalition government,as Minister for Works,Services,Citizenship and Multicultural Interests. [1] He became Minister for Police,Emergency Services and Road Safety with the return to power of the Coalition in September 2008. [2]
Johnson supports reintroducing the Death Penalty,in 2007 he lobbyed the Western Australia liberal party to adopt a policy on capital punishment. [3]
In his first two years as minister in the new Barnett government,Johnson introduced 16 bills into the Legislative Assembly. [4] Many of them were controversial and high-profile, [5] including increasing the impounding period of a vehicle for anyone convicted of a "hoon" offence. [6] Other measures were to ensure motorists with a blood alcohol reading of 0.08 or above lost their licence immediately at the roadside, [7] that all revenue from speed and red light cameras would go to road safety projects, [8] and a proposal for Australia's first online sex offender register. [9]
In early 2011,political commentator Peter van Onselen named Johnson among Australia's "top ten politicians you could trust",writing that "he is real and what you see is what you get". [10]
Investigations following a major bushfire in the Perth hills in February 2011,with the loss of 71 homes, [11] [12] and another in the Margaret River area,resulted in severe criticism of Johnson,and he was removed from the Emergency Services portfolio. [13]
In May 2012,federal Liberal MP for Canning,Don Randall,attacked Johnson in Federal Parliament,labelling him bumbling,weak and incompetent. [5] In turn,Johnson called for Randall to be sacked over the misuse of travel expenses. [14]
After a cabinet reshuffle by premier Colin Barnett in June 2012,Johnson was removed from the Police and Road Safety portfolio. [2] [15] [16] At the 2013 Western Australian state election,he was re-elected to the seat of Hillarys. [17]
After arriving in Australia,Johnson started a family business incorporating an investment firm and a national computer distributorship. [1]
He is a former chair of Radio Lollipop (Australia),a charity that cares for children in hospital. [1]
Donald James Randall was an Australian politician of the Liberal Party. He represented the Division of Swan,Western Australia in the Australian House of Representatives from 1996 to 1998,as well as the Division of Canning,Western Australia,from 2001 until his death in 2015. In 1976,she joined the Australian Labor Party,and at the 1993 Western Australian state election,she was elected to the Legislative Council's East Metropolitan Region. She became a shadow minister in October 1994,and she was transferred to the Legislative Assembly at the 1996 state election,winning the seat of Armadale.
Mark McGowan is an Australian politician,currently serving as the 30th premier of Western Australia since March 2017,and the leader of the Western Australian branch of the Labor Party since January 2012.

John Biase D'Orazio was an Australian politician who served as the member for Ballajura in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 10 February 2001 to 6 September 2008. He was a minister in the governments of Geoff Gallop and Alan Carpenter,and a member of the Australian Labor Party until 29 August 2006,when he resigned following several controversies. Born to Italian immigrants,D'Orazio grew up on a market garden in the Perth suburb of Bayswater. He studied pharmacy at the Western Australian Institute of Technology,later opening his own pharmacy business. In 1981,he was elected to the Bayswater council,and in 1984,he became the mayor of Bayswater,in which position he served until 2001.
The Barnett Ministry was the 35th Ministry of the Government of Western Australia. It included 13 members of the Liberal Party,three members of the National Party and an independent. It was led by the Premier of Western Australia,Colin Barnett,and Deputy Premier Liza Harvey. It succeeded the Carpenter Ministry on 23 September 2008 following the 2008 election and was succeeded by the First McGowan Ministry following the Liberal Party's defeat at the 2017 election.
Michael Dennis Nahan is a former Australian politician who was Leader of the Liberal Party of Australia's Western Australian branch and Leader of the Opposition from the 2017 state election until his resignation in June 2019. He served as Treasurer of Western Australia under the Barnett Ministry from March 2014 until the government's fall in March 2017. Nahan was also the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Riverton from 2008 until 2021,when he was succeeded by Labor's Jags Krishnan.
Mia Jane Davies is an Australian politician who is the current Leader of the Opposition and leader of the National Party in Western Australia. She has been a member of the state Legislative Assembly since 2013,having previously served in the Legislative Council from 2009 to 2013. Davies was elected deputy leader of the Nationals in November 2013,and replaced Brendon Grylls as leader in March 2017 following his defeat at the 2017 state election. As a result of the Liberal Party's electoral wipeout at the 2021 state election,she became leader of the opposition after Premier Mark McGowan gave her party the official opposition party funding,the first member of her party to hold the role since Arthur Watts in 1947.
Liza Mary Harvey is an Australian politician who was the Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 2008 to 2021,representing the seat of Scarborough. She was a minister in the government of Colin Barnett,and in 2016 was appointed deputy premier,becoming the first woman to hold the position. She became leader of the opposition after being elected unopposed to replace Mike Nahan as state Liberal leader on 13 June 2019. On 22 November 2020,she resigned as Liberal leader and was replaced by Zak Kirkup. She lost her seat at the 2021 election.
Peter Argyris Katsambanis is a former Australian politician. He was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council at the 2013 state election,representing the Liberal Party,taking his seat on 22 May 2013. He resigned in 2017 to successfully contest the Legislative Assembly seat of Hillarys. At the 2021 Western Australian state election,he was defeated by Labor's Caitlin Collins. He was previously a Liberal member of the Victorian Legislative Council,from 1996 to 2002.

The eight-and-a-half-year two-term incumbent Liberal–WA National government,led by Premier Colin Barnett,was defeated in a landslide by the Labor opposition,led by Opposition Leader Mark McGowan.
Dean Cambell Nalder is an Australian former politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia for the Liberal Party from 2013 to 2021,representing the seat of Alfred Cove until 2017,and Bateman following the 2017 electoral boundary re-distribution. At various times,he served as Minister for Transport,Minister for Finance and Minister for Agriculture and Food in the ministry of Premier Colin Barnett from 2014 to 2016. Following the Liberals' defeat at the 2017 state election,Nalder served in a number of shadow portfolios in the shadow ministries of Mike Nahan and Liza Harvey until resigning from the frontbench on 8 December 2020,following his announcement of retirement from politics at the next election. He was succeeded in his seat of Bateman by Labor's Kim Giddens on 13 March 2021.
