He is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Massey University, the head of the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Study, the former president of the New Zealand Mathematical Society, and former editor-in-chief of the New Zealand Journal of Mathematics. He is a former Vice-President of the Royal Society of New Zealand [Mathematical, Physical Sciences Engineering and Technology. His research concerns quasiconformal mappings, regularity theory for partial differential equations, and connections between the theory of discrete groups and low-dimensional topology.

    Eric Vanden-Eijnden is a professor of mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University. Vanden-Eijnden earned his doctorate in 1997 from the Université libre de Bruxelles under the supervision of Radu Bălescu. In 2009 he was awarded the Germund Dahlquist Prize of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics "for his work in developing mathematical tools and numerical methods for the analysis of dynamical systems that are both stochastic and multiscale", and in 2011 he won SIAM's J.D.     The Aitken Lectureship is awarded by the New Zealand Mathematical Society to a research mathematician from New Zealand. The lectureship is named for New Zealander Professor Alexander Aitken, formerly of the University of Edinburgh. The lectureship was funded in 2009 by the London Mathematical Society and the New Zealand Mathematical Society, and is normally awarded every two years, alternating with the Forder Lectureship. Recipients of the lectureship will give a several-week lecturing tour of UK universities and a lecture at the annual meeting of the London society.

    Yingda Cheng is a Chinese-American applied mathematician specializing in scientific computation and numerical analysis, including Galerkin methods for the computational solution of differential equations and the simulation of nonlinear optics and plasma physics. She is a professor of mathematics at Virginia Tech.
