Robert W. Curran (born July 17,1950) is a former member of the Baltimore City Council representing the Third Council District in Baltimore,Maryland. A member of a prominent Maryland political family,Curran is the son of J. Joseph Curran,Sr.,Baltimore City Councilman from 1953 through 1977,a brother of former Maryland attorney general J. Joseph Curran,Jr.,brother to a former city councilman,Mike Curran, [2] and uncle of Katie O'Malley,wife of former Governor of Maryland,Martin O'Malley.
Curran was born July 17,1950,in Baltimore,Maryland,the son of Catherine Mary (Clark) and Baltimore City Council member J. Joseph Curran,Sr. [3] [4] He attended Loyola High School and graduated in 1968. Curran then attended Mount Saint Mary's College and the Community College of Baltimore. [1]
Curran was on the council representing the Third District from 1995 to 2016. A former vice chairman of the Baltimore City Council,Curran served as the chair of the Executive Appointments Committee and vice-chair of the council's Judiciary and Legislative Investigations Committee. He was a member of the Budget and Appropriations Committee and the chair of that committee's Labor Subcommittee.
Martin Joseph O'Malley is an American lawyer and former politician who currently serves as commissioner of the Social Security Administration since December 2023. A member of the Democratic Party,he was the 61st governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015 and the 48th mayor of Baltimore from 1999 to 2007.
J. Joseph Curran Jr. is an American lawyer and the longest serving elected attorney general in Maryland history,and previously the fourth lieutenant governor of Maryland from 1983 to 1987. His son-in-law,Martin J. O'Malley,served as the 61st governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015.

The 2006 Maryland Attorney General election was held on November 7,2006. Incumbent Democratic Attorney General of Maryland J. Joseph Curran Jr. declined to seek a sixth term in office,prompted by his son-in-law,Martin O'Malley running for Governor and so wanting to avoid a conflict of interest. Montgomery County State's Attorney Doug Gansler won the Democratic primary to succeed Curran and faced off against Scott Rolle,the Frederick County State's Attorney who was unopposed in the Republican primary. Ultimately,Gansler defeated Rolle in a landslide and became the Attorney General of Maryland.

Because Baltimore's electorate is overwhelmingly Democratic,Sheila Dixon's victory in the Democratic primary on September 11 all but assured her of victory in the general election;she defeated Republican candidate Elbert Henderson in the general election by an overwhelming majority. Dixon,who as president of the Baltimore City Council became mayor in January 2007 when Martin O'Malley resigned to become Governor of Maryland,was the first woman to be elected to the office.

The UBalt School of Law is one of only two law schools in the state of Maryland.
