He won Barbados' first and only Olympic medal as an independent country by placing third in the 100 metres at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He is a three-time Olympian, and a finalist at each Olympics. His personal best performances are 9.87 seconds for the 100 m, 19.97 seconds for the 200 metres, and 45.38 seconds for the 400 metres. He has held the indoor 55 metres world record since 1997.

The Eastern Illinois Panthers are the intercollegiate athletic programs of Eastern Illinois University (EIU) located in Charleston, Illinois, United States. The Panthers athletic program is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) and competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Football Championship Subdivision. EIU's colors are blue and gray. Selected as the team mascot in 1930, EIU's panther was informally known as "Billy" for many years and was officially named "Billy the Panther" in 2008. Panther teams have won five NCAA national championships in three sports. The Panthers also won the 1969 NAIA men's soccer title.

William Samuel Steele was an American athlete who competed mainly in the long jump. Steele won the gold medal in the long jump at the 1948 London Olympics. A two-time USA Outdoor champion, Steele was the 1948 Olympic Trials champion and a two-time NCAA long jump champion. He was considered the world's best long jumper in 1942 and 1946, and was world ranked #1 by Track & Field News their first two years of producing worldwide rankings, 1947 and 1948.

She was the 200 m gold medalist at the 1983 Pan American Games and returned to win a silver medal at the 1987 edition.

She Won the 2018 Commonwealth and 2018 African champion in the event. She is also a two-time African Games champion. She won the Diamond League Trophy in Zurich in 2021 in the 100m hurdles.
Jacinta Bartholomew is a retired Grenadian athlete who specialized in the Long Jump. She represented Grenada in this event at the 1984 Summer Olympics, as part of the country's first contingent to the games and was the only female member, and therefore the first woman to represent the nation at the Olympics. As expected she competed in the Long Jump but did not progress beyond the preliminary stage.
