Rosemary Joshua (born 16 October 1964 [1] ) is a Welsh soprano, particularly known for her performances in Handel's operas. [2]
Joshua was born in Cardiff and studied at the Royal College of Music. After completing her studies there, she made her debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival as Angelica in Handel's Orlando . Other early operatic appearances were Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Scottish Opera, and both Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro , Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier , norina in Don Pasquale for English National Opera. She has gone on to sing major soprano roles in many of the world's leading opera houses and festivals, including Adèle in Die Fledermaus at the Metropolitan Opera, New York; the title role in The Cunning Little Vixen and Titania in Midsummer Nights Dream at La Scala, Milan and Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam; [3] Anne Trulove in The Rake's Progress at the Glyndebourne Festival and Zerlina, Anne Truelove, Angelica, Orlando, Despina at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
She took the title role in Ken Russell's production of Princess Ida for ENO at the Coliseum Theatre in 1992. [4]
She has appeared in concert across Europe and the USA And has collaborated with many leading conductors including Roger Norrington, Charles Mackerras, Mark Elder, Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Vladimir Jurowski, Gustavo Dudamel, Colin Davis, Marc Albrecht, René Jacobs, William Christie and Marc Minkowski in leading concert halls including The London BBC Proms Royal Albert hall, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall and Musikverein and Mozarteum, Vienna. Her many recordings include Handel’s Partenope , Esther , Semele , Romilda ( Serse ), Emilia ( Flavio ), Nitocris ( Belshazzar ), Michal ( Saul ) and Angelica ( Orlando ); as well as Venus and Adonis , Blow, Belinda in Dido and Aeneas and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, Manfred Tojahns Orest and a solo recording of Purcell’s Harmonia Sacra . She has also released two duo recitals with Sarah Connolly of Handel Duets and a Purcell duets live from the Wigmore Hall.
Rosemary Joshua has been appointed as the Artistic Director of the Dutch National Opera Studio, the new Young Artists programme at the Dutch National Opera house which launched in September 2018.

Orlando is an opera seria in three acts by George Frideric Handel written for the King's Theatre in London in 1733. The Italian libretto was adapted from Carlo Sigismondo Capece's L'Orlando after Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, which was also the source of Handel's operas Alcina and Ariodante. More an artistic than a popular success at its first performances, Orlando is today recognised as a masterpiece.
Margaret Valerie Masterson, is a retired English opera singer, a lecturer and Vice-President of British Youth Opera. After study in Italy, she began to sing opera in Europe. Returning to England, Masterson performed as principal soprano with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company from 1964 to 1969, becoming popular with audiences and participating in several of the company's recordings, as well as those of Gilbert and Sullivan for All and the BBC.

Karina Gauvin is a Canadian soprano who has made several recordings and is especially recognised for her interpretation of Baroque music. Opera News stated that, "Gauvin knows how to rivet an audience in opera and concert. She has been a queen of Baroque opera for years. Her personality is big enough to dominate her elaborate wigs and costumes, and her soprano voice is like a clear, refreshing and inexhaustible spring that darts and sparkles around any ornamental obstacle in its way."
Bejun Mehta is an American countertenor. He has been awarded the Echo Klassik, the Gramophone Award, Le Diamant d’Opera Magazine, the Choc de Classica, the Traetta Prize, and been nominated for the Grammy Award, the Laurence Olivier Award, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Writing in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Michael Stallknecht called him "arguably the best counter tenor in the world today."
Dame Sarah Patricia Connolly is an English mezzo-soprano. Although best known for her baroque and classical roles, Connolly has a wide-ranging repertoire which has included works by Wagner as well as various 20th-century composers. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours and a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to music.
Partenope is an opera by George Frideric Handel, first performed at the King's Theatre in London on 24 February 1730. Although following the structure and forms of opera seria, the work is humorous in character and light-textured in music, with a plot involving romantic complications and gender confusion. A success with audiences at the time of its original production and then unperformed for many years, Partenope is now often seen on the world's opera stages.
Winifred Lawson was an English opera and concert singer in the first half of the 20th century. She is particularly remembered for her performances in the soprano roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas as a member of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company between 1922 and 1932.

Joyce DiDonato is an American lyric-coloratura mezzo-soprano. She is notable for her interpretations of operas and concert works in the 19th-century romantic era in addition to works by Handel and Mozart.
The Early Opera Company is a British ensemble dedicated to the performance of baroque operas using period instruments. It was founded in 1994 by Christian Curnyn. Handel's operas feature prominently in its repertoire, and the Company has given notable performances of Acis and Galatea, Dido and Aeneas, Agrippina in New York, Orlando at the South Bank Centre Early Music Festival and Partenope at the Linbury Studio Theatre. They have also recorded Partenope and Semele for the Chaconne label on Chandos Records. The recording of Semele was awarded the Handel Prize in 2008. Soloists who have performed with the company include Joshua Bell, Sam Haywood and Jonathan Biss. They performed at the Lufthansa Baroque Music Festival in May 2009 with John Eccles's The Judgment of Paris in one its first ever performances. The ensemble also made the premiere recording of the work for Chandos Records.

In a career that spanned nearly 40 years, she sang a wide range of operatic character roles and other classical pieces, including standard opera repertory, premieres, 20th century pieces, art song and other music.

Heidi Stober is an American operatic soprano who has performed leading roles in major opera houses internationally, including the Dutch National Opera, the Garsington Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Metropolitan Opera, the Municipal Theatre of Santiago, the Semperoper, and the Vienna State Opera. She has been particularly active with the Houston Grand Opera where she has performed in more than a dozen operas since 2004, including the world premieres of Daniel Catán's Salsipuedes: a Tale of Love, War and Anchovies (2004), Mark Adamo's Lysistrata (2005), and Ricky Ian Gordon's The House without a Christmas Tree (2017).
