Ryland Steen (born August 31, 1980) is an American drummer who was drummer for ska punk band Reel Big Fish from 2005 to 2014 and is the current drummer for soft rock band America since 2014. He has also performed with Maroon 5, Kris Allen, and Phantom Planet. [1]
Steen was born in Lincoln Nebraska on August 31, 1980. [2] [3] His father is Dave Steen, a former member of the 1980s power pop band Hawks and brother to drummer Drew Steen. [4]
Steen began playing piano at the age of 6 and drums at 13. [5] He moved to Orange County, California [6] at age 19 in 2000, [3] with pop/fusion group Square, which also featured vocalist/keyboardist Sean Beste and future Maroon 5 guitarist, James Valentine. [7] Square entered and won an Ernie Ball-sponsored band competition, [7] where Steen met the ska punk band Reel Big Fish. [3]
While in Orange County, Steen worked with various artists, including Audiovent, between 2003 and 2004, and their subsequent spin off band Agent Sparks. [8] He also played with The Elected, The Summer Obsession, Start Trouble, Phantom Planet, [9] Suburban Legends, Mt. Egypt, and TEA. [3] [10] He also briefly performed with Maroon 5 in 2004 as a touring substitute for Ryan Dusick. [11]
In 2005, Steen joined Reel Big Fish, [12] leaving Agent Sparks to do so. [8] He played on three studio albums with Reel Big Fish. He started touring with the band America in 2014, going on hiatus from Reel Big Fish to do so. Steen has stayed with America to the present day [13] with his position in Reel Big Fish being filled by Edward Beach of Suburban Legends. [14]

Reel Big Fish is an American ska punk band from Huntington Beach, California. The band gained mainstream recognition in the mid-to-late 1990s during the third wave of ska with the release of the gold-certified album Turn the Radio Off. Soon after, the band lost mainstream recognition but gained an underground cult following. As of 2006, the band was no longer signed to a major record label and has since been independent. After numerous line-up changes, frontman Aaron Barrett is the last remaining founding member still performing in the band.
Ska punk is a fusion genre that mixes ska music and punk rock music. Ska punk tends to feature brass instruments, especially horns such as trumpets, trombones and woodwind instruments like saxophones, making the genre distinct from other forms of punk rock. It is closely tied to third wave ska which reached its zenith in the mid-1990s.
Save Ferris is an American ska punk band formed circa 1995 in Orange County, California, United States. Their name is a reference to the 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. In 1995, the band began to perform underground venues in Southern California. In 1996, the band won a Grammy showcase award for best unsigned band and a contract with Epic Records. Their album It Means Everything from 1997 was their first full-length album. By 1999, the band moved from ska-pop into pop-punk. After a hiatus, in 2017, Save Ferris released the Checkered Past EP.

Suburban Legends are an American ska punk band that formed in Huntington Beach, California, in 1998 and later based themselves in nearby Santa Ana. After building a fanbase in the Orange County ska scene through their numerous regular performances at the Disneyland Resort, a series of lineup changes in 2005 introduced elements of funk and disco into the group's style.
Cheer Up! is the fourth studio album by American rock band Reel Big Fish. Released on June 25, 2002, the album was the band's first after the turn of the new millennium, following the release of 1998's Why Do They Rock So Hard? With the advent of the 2000s, and following the band's mainstream success during the third wave of ska, the marketability of and interest in ska waned; despite this, Reel Big Fish continued to tour successfully and maintain a significant fan base while recording Cheer Up! across a number of different recording studios in California. Val Garay produced the majority of the tracks, with frontman Aaron Barrett, trumpeter Scott Klopfenstein and Gordie Johnson producing select songs.
Sam John Farrar is an American musician. He is best known as a member of the pop band Maroon 5, in which he plays several instruments, primarily bass guitar. A frequent collaborator with the band since the 1990s, he joined as a touring member in 2012 and was promoted to an official member in 2016. He has also been the bassist for the rock band Phantom Planet since their formation in 1994.

Audiovent is an American alternative rock band from Calabasas, California. Initially forming as "Vent" in the early 1990s, the band changed their name to Audiovent upon signing with Atlantic Records in 2001. The band released their one and only album on a major record label, Dirty Sexy Knights in Paris, in 2002. Two singles were released to rock radio and charted with moderate success - "The Energy" and "Looking Down". The band began work on a second album in 2003, demoing over 19 tracks over the course of the year, but disbanded in mid-2004 before the album could be formally recorded, due to creative differences between band members. They reformed in 2017 for several reunion shows, then began writing and recording new material in 2022. They released their first single, "Sleepless Machine" in late 2023, with more music to follow.

Formed in 1990, they played numerous shows in small-venue clubs with many now famous O.C. bands opening their performances, including Sublime, No Doubt, and Reel Big Fish. Suburban Rhythm met with various roster changes and broke up in 1994. Three years later in 1997 their only full-length album, Suburban Rhythm was released.
