S. P. Shanmuganathan (born 9 September 1954) is an Indian politician and incumbent member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Srivaikuntam constituency. He is the former Minister for Milk and Dairy Development. [1]

Family & early life

S. P. Shanmuganathan was born on 9 September 1954 in Pandaravailai in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. His father, Ponnaiah Nadar was a Payilvan (Gym master) and Teacher. Shanmuganathan finished his Siddha degree in Kumbakonam. His wife Asha, five daughters and a son.

Political career

He joined All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 1972. He served as the unopposed Panchayat secretary of Perungulam, Perungulam town secretary, Srivaikuntam union secretary, Presently he is the AIADMK's secretary of south Thoothukudi District. [2] In 2001 election he selected as MLA of Srivaikuntam constituency. [3] [4]

In 2006 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, he lost to D. Selvaraj of Indian National Congress by 1,632 votes in the Srivaikuntam constituency. [5] In 2011 Tamil Nadu assembly election he was elected from the Srivaikundam constituency and served as a minister for Hindu religious and charitable endowments in J. Jayalalithaa's cabinet. [6] He was sacked as Minister for Rural Industries in November 2011 as part of the third cabinet reshuffle in a five-month period by Jayalalithaa. [7]

In June 2013 he was appointed as minister of Tourism and Tourism development. [8]

In 2016 Assembly elections Shanmuganathan won in Srivaikuntam Constituency against Indian National Congress candidate Rani Venkatesan. After that he became minister of Milk and Dairy Development under J. Jayalalithaa's sixth term. He was released from cabinet on 29 August 2016 due to unknown reason. [9]

1989 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election

The ninth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 21 January 1989. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won the election and its leader M. Karunanidhi, became the Chief Minister. It was his third term in office. The DMK was in power only for a short term, as it was dismissed on 31 January 1991 by the Indian Prime minister Chandra Shekhar using Article 356 of the Indian Constitution.

By-elections to nine state assembly constituencies were held in Tamil Nadu, in four separate phases. Election for Thirumangalam was held on 9 January and for Bargur, Thondamuthur, Ilayankudi, Cumbum, and Srivaikuntam constituencies on 18 August. Also, election took place for Vandavasi and Tiruchendur constituency on 19 December 2009 and finally for Pennagaram constituency on 27 March 2010. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) defeated All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Thirumangalam in the first phase and kept the winning momentum in the following general election.

S. Sundararaj is an Indian politician and incumbent member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Paramakudi constituency. He is currently the Minister for sports and youth welfare of the Govt. of Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as an Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (Jayalalitha) candidate from Paramakudi constituency in 1989 election and 1991 election as an Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate.

Edappadi K. Palaniswami Indian politician and the current chief minister of Tamil Nadu

Edappadi Karuppa Gounder Palaniswami, is an Indian politician serving as the 7th and current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu since 16 February 2017. He is the joint coordinator of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). He is also serving in the government of Tamil Nadu as Minister of Highways and Minor Ports since 16 May 2011.
