Open access (OA) is a set of principles and a range of practices through which research outputs are distributed online, free of access charges or other barriers. With open access strictly defined, or libre open access, barriers to copying or reuse are also reduced or removed by applying an open license for copyright.
Scopus is Elsevier's abstract and citation database launched in 2004. Scopus covers 36,377 titles from 11,678 publishers, of which 34,346 are peer-reviewed journals in top-level subject fields: life sciences, social sciences, physical sciences and health sciences. It covers three types of sources: book series, journals, and trade journals. Scopus also allows patent searches in a dedicated patent database Lexis-Nexis, albeit with a limited functionality.
Energy & Environment is an academic journal "covering the direct and indirect environmental impacts of energy acquisition, transport, production and use". Under its editor-in-chief from 1998 to 2017, Sonja Boehmer-Christiansen, it was known for easygoing peer-review and publishing climate change denial papers. Yiu Fai Tsang became its editor-in-chief in May 2017.

MDPI is a publisher of open access scientific journals. Founded by Shu-Kun Lin as a chemical sample archive, it now publishes over 390 peer-reviewed, open access journals. MDPI is among the largest publishers in the world in terms of journal article output, and is the largest publisher of open access articles.
New Journal of Physics is an online-only, open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research in all aspects of physics, as well as interdisciplinary topics where physics forms the central theme. The journal was established in 1998 and is a joint publication of the Institute of Physics and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft. It is published by IOP Publishing. The editor-in-chief is Andreas Buchleitner (Albert Ludwigs University). New Journal of Physics is part of the SCOAP3 initiative.
Africa Spectrum is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed academic journal concentrating on current development issues in Africa south of the Sahara. It is the only German academic journal exclusively devoted to Africa and is Platinum Open Access. Africa Spectrum is published three times a year by the GIGA Institute of African Affairs and was founded in 1966. The journal is part of the GIGA Journal Family of the GIGA-Institute of African Affairs (Deutsches Institut für Afrika-Forschung/Institute of African Studies within the German Institute for Global and Area Studies at. Issues starting from the year 1966 are available at JSTOR, with a three-year moving wall.
The Journal of Contemporary History is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal covering the study of history in all parts of the world since 1930. It was established in 1966 by Walter Laqueur and George L. Mosse. Originally published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson it was purchased by SAGE Publications in 1972. The editors-in-chief are Richard J. Evans and Mary C. Neuburger.
The Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods is a biannual peer-reviewed open access journal. It was established in 2002 by Shlomo Sawilowsky, and is currently published by the Wayne State University Library System in Detroit, MI. The Current Index to Statistics classifies it as one of over 160 core statistics journals. The journal originally appeared as a print and electronic journal through volume 8(1) in 2009, and subsequently as an electronic journal only. It publishes peer-reviewed work pertaining to new statistical tests and the comparison of existing statistical tests; bootstrap, Jackknife, and resampling methods; nonparametric, robust, permutation, exact, and approximate randomization methods; and statistical algorithms, pseudorandom number generators, and simulation techniques. The journal is indexed in the Elsevier Bibliographic Database, EMBASE, Compendex, Geobase, PsycINFO, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. It is also listed in the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics and Cabells.

From the "Newsletters of the Program on the Public Conceptions of Science" that Gerald Holton established in 1972, it became The Newsletter on Science, Technology, & Human Values, in 1976. ST&HV is published by the Society for Social Studies of Science, in conjunction with SAGE Publications. The journal is currently led by an editorial team based in Australia and New Zealand: Timothy Neale, Courtney Addison, Matthew Kearnes, and Kari Lancaster.
Frontiers Media SA is a publisher of peer-reviewed, open access, scientific journals currently active in science, technology, and medicine. It was founded in 2007 by Kamila and Henry Markram. Frontiers is based in Lausanne, Switzerland, with other offices in the United Kingdom, Spain, and China. In 2022, Frontiers employed more than 1,400 people, across 14 countries. All Frontiers journals are published under a Creative Commons Attribution License.
PeerJ is an open access peer-reviewed scientific mega journal covering research in the biological and medical sciences. It is published by a company of the same name that was co-founded by CEO Jason Hoyt and publisher Peter Binfield, with initial financial backing of US$950,000 from O'Reilly Media's O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, and later funding from Sage Publishing.
Predatory publishing, also write-only publishing or deceptive publishing, is an exploitative academic publishing business model that involves charging publication fees to authors while only superficially checking articles for quality and legitimacy, and without providing editorial and publishing services that legitimate academic journals provide, whether open access or not. Namely, the rejection rate of predatory journals is low, but seldom is zero. The phenomenon of "open access predatory publishers" was first noticed by Jeffrey Beall, when he described "publishers that are ready to publish any article for payment". However, criticisms about the label "predatory" have been raised. A lengthy review of the controversy started by Beall appears in The Journal of Academic Librarianship.
An article processing charge (APC), also known as a publication fee, is a fee which is sometimes charged to authors. Most commonly, it is involved in making an academic work available as open access (OA), in either a full OA journal or in a hybrid journal. This fee may be paid by the author, the author's institution, or their research funder. Sometimes, publication fees are also involved in traditional journals or for paywalled content. Some publishers waive the fee in cases of hardship or geographic location, but this is not a widespread practice. An article processing charge does not guarantee that the author retains copyright to the work, or that it will be made available under a Creative Commons license.
Royal Society Open Science is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal published by the Royal Society since September 2014. Its launch was announced in February 2014. It covers all scientific fields and publishes all articles which are scientifically sound, leaving any judgement of impact to the reader. As of 2022, the editor-in-chief, Dame Wendy Hall DBE FRS FREng FCGI, is supported by a team of Subject Editors and Associate Editors. Commissioning and peer review for the chemistry section of the journal is managed by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The journal offers Registered Reports across all subject disciplines, and Replications as a formal article type in the Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience Section, though the journal welcomes replications in other disciplines, too. In 2021, the journal launched a new 'Science, Society and Policy' section of the journal.
Public Health Reports is a peer-reviewed public health journal established in 1878 and published by SAGE Publishing for the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health and the United States Public Health Service. Articles are published under a delayed open access, where they become fully open access one year after publication. Some special articles are published as open access including regularly published commentaries by the US Surgeon General and other top United States Department of Health and Human Services officials.
