The club was founded 1945 as Union Seekirchen and started playing in the league system in 1946. In 1997 they reached the Regionalliga for the first time. [1]

The club was formed in 2005 by some supporters of the original SV (Austria) Salzburg after it was renamed FC Red Bull Salzburg by its new owners, who also changed the club's colours from its traditional violet and white to red and white.
