Samuel Schachter (born May 8, 1990) is a Canadian Olympic beach volleyball player. [3] In 2010 he won the FIVB World Junior (U-21) Championship with Garrett May. He and partner Josh Binstock were 2014 Canadian national champions, and represented Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2016 Summer Olympics. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he and Binstock earned silver medals.

Early and personal life

Schachter was born in North York, Ontario, now lives in Richmond Hill, Ontario, and is Jewish. [4] His parents are Jon and Doris Schachter, and he has an older brother Nathan. [3]

He attended Westmount Collegiate Institute for high school. [5] He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, competing for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, with whom he was Ontario University Athletics Rookie of the Year. [6] [3] He has coached the Toronto Varsity Blues, George Brown College, and York University men's volleyball teams. [7] [6] [8] [9]

Volleyball career

In 2010 he won the FIVB World Junior (U-21) Championship with Garrett May. [2]

At the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel, he and Team Canada won a silver medal in volleyball, losing the gold medal to the Israelis. [10] [4]

In 2014 he and his then-partner Josh Binstock were Canadian national champions. [4] They also won a gold medal at the Parana Open, an FIVB (international volleyball federation) World Tour event. [4] He was named the (U.S.) National Volleyball League (NVL) 2014 Best Defensive Player. [11]

In 2015 they competed at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, and finished 8th, after Schachter suffered a back injury prevented them from playing in the relegation round. [12] They finished 9th at the 2015 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship. [4] In June of that year they also came in second at the Major Series tournament in Porec, Croatia, the first time a Canadian men's team had reached the podium in a major FIVB World Tour event since 1997. [2] They competed in the 2015 FIVB World Championship, finishing ninth. [2]

In May 2016, they finishing second at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Cincinnati Open. [2]

Schachter competed along with Binstock at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where they came in 19th. [13]

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he and Binstock earned silver medals. [9]

Josh Binstock, nicknamed Binner, is a male two-time Olympian beach volleyball player from Canada. He competed in the 2012 Olympics in London and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. He also competed for Canada in volleyball in Israel in the 2001 Maccabiah Games, the 2005 Maccabiah Games, the 2009 Maccabiah Games, the 2013 Maccabiah Games, and the 2017 Maccabiah Games. In 2014, he and his partner were Canadian national champions, his third national championship.

Maciej "Matt" Zbyszewski is a male beach volleyball and volleyball player and coach from Canada who won the silver medal at the NORCECA Circuit 2009 at Puerto Vallarta playing with Josh Binstock.

The Trinity Western Spartans men's volleyball team is a university varsity volleyball program in Canada that represents Trinity Western University, competing in the Canada West Universities Athletics Association of U Sports. Based out of Langley, British Columbia, the Spartans play their home games at the Langley Events Centre, a multi-sport facility close to the main campus. Led by then head coach Ron Pike, the Spartans won their first ever National Championship in 2006, defeating the University of Alberta Golden Bears in the final by a score of 3–0. Since then, the Spartans have won six more championships, for a total of seven, hoisting the Tantramar Trophy again in 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2023. The Spartans were led by head coach Ben Josephson from 2007 to 2022 before he took over as the head coach for Canada's men's volleyball program. Adam Schriemer is now the head coach. In the Canada West conference, the Spartans have won the league title seven times, taking the conference championship in 2007, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2022.

Christopher McHugh is a male beach volleyball player from Australia. He represented Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, both with teammate Damien Schumann, winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Unfortunately, competing at the 2020 Olympics, the pair were knocked out in the group stage after finishing at the bottom of their pool.
