Sangre Nueva Zeta is a Mexican criminal syndicate formed in 2019. The organization is made up of former members of Los Zetas.
Sangre Nueva Zeta first appeared to the general public on 19 October 2019, when two messages were exhibited in the city of Puebla. They threatened Miguel Barbosa Huerta, governor of Puebla, and Fernando Manzanillo, secretary of the state government. [3]
The group was founded by Roberto de los Santos de Jesús, nicknamed "El Bukanas", a trainer of sicarios from Los Zetas. Sangre Nueva Zeta then expanded thanks to its alliance with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, a major enemy of Los Zetas, and also due to corruption. [2] [1]
On 17 December 2021, the Mexican Navy arrested Néstor "El Viejón" Carvajal Colotla in Tepeaca, Puebla. El Viejón is one of the leaders of Sangre Nueva Zeta and is one of the criminal group's links with the CJNG (he is said to have carried out several operations under the command of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes). Barbosa welcomed this arrest and promised to dismantle the Sangre Nueva Zeta. [4] [5]
Sangre Nueva Zeta originally focused on huachicol (theft and illicit sale of fuel) formed by elements practicing it for Los Zetas, acting in the Red Triangle. However, it would expand in additional illegal activities, such as cocaine trafficking and extortion. [2]
Osiel Cárdenas Guillén is a Mexican drug lord and the former leader of the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas. Originally a mechanic in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, he entered the cartel by killing Juan García Abrego's friend and competitor Salvador Gómez, after the former's arrest in 1996. As confrontations with rival groups heated up, Osiel Cárdenas sought and recruited over 30 deserters from the Grupo Aeromóvil de Fuerzas Especiales to form the cartel's armed wing. Los Zetas served as the hired private mercenary army of the Gulf Cartel.

La Familia Michoacana, La Familia, is a Mexican drug cartel and organized crime syndicate based in the Mexican state of Michoacán. They are known to produce large amounts of methamphetamine in clandestine laboratories in Michoacan. Formerly allied to the Gulf Cartel—as part of Los Zetas—it split off in 2006. The cartel was founded by Carlos Rosales Mendoza, a close associate of Osiel Cárdenas. The second leader, Nazario Moreno González, known as El Más Loco, preached his organization's divine right to eliminate enemies. He carried a "bible" of his own sayings and insisted that his army of traffickers and hitmen avoid using the narcotics they produce and sell. Nazario Moreno's partners were José de Jesús Méndez Vargas, Servando Gómez Martínez and Enrique Plancarte Solís, each of whom has a bounty of $2 million for his capture, and were contesting the control of the organization.
Luis Fernando Sánchez Arellano, commonly referred to by the alias El Ingeniero ("The Engineer"), is a Mexican suspected drug lord and former leader of the Tijuana Cartel, a drug trafficking organization based in Tijuana, Baja California. He competed with three other major cartels, the Juárez Cartel, the Gulf Cartel, and the Sinaloa Cartel, for the illegal drug corridors into the United States.
The Milenio Cartel, or Cártel de los Valencia, was a Mexican criminal organization based in Michoacán. It relocated to Jalisco in the early 2000s. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel was born from the splintering of the Milenio Cartel.

However, Cárteles Unidos' current main rival has now become the Jalisco New Generation Cartel; a paramilitary criminal organization based in the neighboring state of Jalisco.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel or CJNG, is a Mexican criminal syndicate, based in Jalisco and headed by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes. The cartel has been characterized by extreme violence and public relations campaigns. Though the CJNG is known for diversifying into various criminal rackets, drug trafficking remains its most profitable activity. The cartel has been noted for cannibalizing some victims during the training of new sicarios or members, as well as using drones and rocket-propelled grenades to attack enemies.
Efraín Teodoro Torres was a Mexican suspected drug lord and one of the founders of Los Zetas, a criminal organization formed by former soldiers of the Mexican Armed Forces. He joined the Mexican Army in mid-1991 but deserted after seven years of service. In 1998, Torres was recruited by the drug lord Osiel Cárdenas Guillén to join the ranks of the Gulf Cartel, a drug trafficking organization. The new group formed by ex-commandos came to be known as Los Zetas.
José González Valencia is a Mexican suspected drug lord and high-ranking leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a criminal group based in Jalisco. He is part of a clan that heads a CJNG money laundering branch known as Los Cuinis. Since 2015, González Valencia reportedly held a leading role within the CJNG as the security chief of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the top leader of the criminal group. Security forces in the U.S. and Mexico suspect he was also responsible for coordinating drug trafficking operations from Mexico to the U.S., Asia, and Europe.
Jorge López Pérez, also known as El Chuta, is a Mexican suspected drug lord and high-ranking member of Los Zetas, a criminal group based in Tamaulipas, Mexico. López Pérez joined the Mexican Army in 1979. He specialized in martial arts, parachuting, explosives and guerrilla warfare tactics. In 1981, he deserted from the military and joined a cell of the Juárez Cartel, where he coordinated drug trafficking operations in Cancún. In the early 2000s, López Pérez left and worked as an independent trafficker before joining the Gulf Cartel. He became one of the first members of the cartel's newly formed paramilitary wing, Los Zetas. Like López Pérez, most of the first members of Los Zetas were ex-military. Wanted on drug trafficking charges, he is one of the last remaining fugitives from the early Zetas generation.
Luis Alberto Guerrero Reyes was a Mexican suspected drug lord and high-ranking member of Los Zetas, a criminal group based in Tamaulipas, Mexico. He joined the Mexican Army in 1987, specializing in explosives, martial arts and grenade launchers. In 1999, he deserted the military and joined the Gulf Cartel under kingpin Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, becoming one of the first members of its newly formed paramilitary wing, Los Zetas. Like Guerrero Reyes, most of the first members of Los Zetas were ex-military. Los Zetas was responsible for providing security services to Cárdenas Guillén and carrying out executions on the cartel's behalf.
The Nueva Plaza Cartel is a Mexican criminal organization from the state of Jalisco. The group began as a split from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, having an important presence in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, having been previously commanded by Carlos Enrique Sánchez Martínez, "El Cholo," Emilio Alejandro Pulido Saldaña, "El Tiburón," and Érick Valencia Salazar "El 85". El Cholo would be killed in 2021, with "El Tiburón" surrendering himself to Mexican authorities soon afterwards. El 85 would be arrested in 2022.
The Los Rojos Cartel is a Mexican criminal organization that emerged as a split from the Beltran-Leyva Cartel, being led at first by brothers Arturo "El Barbas" and Héctor "El Ingeniero", Alfredo "El Mochomo" and Jésus Nava Romero "El Rojo", hence the name of the group. The group also has an important participation in drug trafficking to the United States.
Sergio Salomón Céspedes Peregrina is a Mexican politician affiliated with Morena and substitute Governor of Puebla since 15 December 2022. He was named by the Congress of Puebla to succeed the deceased Miguel Barbosa Huerta.
The Zetas Vieja Escuela is a Mexican criminal organization that splintered from Los Zetas. It was founded by José Guizar Valencia, alias "Z-43", along with other dissidents of the original organization. The group took the name Vieja Escuela, arguing that they would continue the "original business" of drug trafficking, including the same brutality.
