A beauty pageant is a competition in which the contestants are judged and ranked based on various physical and mental attributes. Per its name, beauty pageants traditionally focus on judging the contestants' physical attractiveness, sometimes solely so, but most modern beauty pageants have since expanded to also judge contestants based on "inner beauty"—their individual traits and characteristics, including personality, intelligence, aptitude, moral character, and charity. Though typically perceived as a female-oriented competition, male beauty pageants also exist, as do child beauty pageants for youth.

She was crowned by Miss World 1982, Mariasela Álvarez of Dominican Republic. First runner-up was Rocío Isabel Luna representing Colombia and second runner-up was Cátia Pedrosa from Brazil. Miss World 1983 marked the first Miss World event that included an intelligence test for contestants. The intelligence test was created by psychologists.

On December 3, 2008, Francisco placed among the top ten finalists at the Miss World 2008 Top Model competition held in Soweto, South Africa.
Anyoli Amorette Abrego Sanjur, is a Panamanian model and beauty pageant titleholder who winner of the Señorita Panamá 2010 contest on 8 July 2010. She represented Panama in the 59th Miss Universe 2010 which was held in the Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States, on 23 August 2010.

Reinas de Costa Rica is a national beauty pageant in Costa Rica that selects representatives to the Miss World and Miss International pageant. After the Miss Costa Rica pageant stopped sending contestants to the Miss World and Miss International pageants in 2006, the franchise was acquired by the Reinas de Costa Rica organization presided by Alan Aleman. However, after two years of absence in the Miss World pageant in 2017-2018, the organization eventually lost the franchise to the newly established contest, Concurso Nacional de Belleza de Costa Rica in 2019. The organization also lost the Miss Earth franchise to Jose Vásconez in 2016.
